Just interested really, what with Obama and his gang being in town, what does it take to keep this show on the road. Logistics, vehicles and aircraft of any kind have always been of interest to me so I was just wondering if anyone here knew anything on facts and figures?
Whats involved when the President of the US of A is visiting foreign nations? Just what does he take with him for every visit, what are the must haves in terms of personnel, vehicles and aircraft? How far in advance would today's trips have been planned in advance? How do they get the vehicles and kit over here from the USA? I'm guessing an Osprey is a bit much for a UPS next day delivery.
Also, when they are all finally here, where is all the kit stored overnight?
Does anyone here have any idea?
Cheers.

Discovery have done shows on the building of his limo and Air Force One, I would guess that US bases would provide storage for vehicles etc whilst he is here and the secret service plan everything years in advance (except when they grounded the limo on a slope on a previous visit!).

A very good friend of mine is a close protection officer/VIP protection officer, he planned much of the protection for when the Pipe visited.

We were chatting a few years ago about when the American President comes to town; basically much of it is planned and carried by the Americans and their protection officers, the UK Police don't get nearly as involved as they would if it was anyone else.

All vehicles, helicopters etc are brought over from the States, they even bring their own fuel.

Logistically and financially it is huge.

I was at university when the G8 summit was on. Clintons plane landed at the airport and helicoptered to his hotel. There was 2 of presidential helicopters you see on TV and 8 apaches. All of which flew within yards of my room and landed at the local school.

He stayed at a hotel near where I lived so I watched his motorcade. Even before he set off the impact on Birmingham was clear. Every manhole cover had been checked and sealed. There were snipers and spotters on all the tall buildings. His convoy had around 20 cars including an ambulance and a mobile power station. All of which were US registered. Bill entered the car in a tent so was not exposed. It seemed excessive but the German had him beat when we found out he sends someone ahead to sleep in the beds at hotels to test them.

I don't know if there was heightened security for any reason but, the Japanese delegate was assassinated at a later date

Air Force One, and they fly over two 747's costs US $ 146,000 an hour to fly. Then he has two helicopters, plus well over sixty support staff and then a personal security detail. Everything i supplied by the US, and even the food he will eat will be tested. Don't forget the US military people who are always just behind the President and then there is the large press corps that follow on too. Silly money that the US taxpayers pick up.

I was playing golf up at the West London course yesterday, the motorcade passed by on the parkway on the way there and the fleet of aircraft passed over the golf course twice. Saw one of the Ospreys landing at Northolt when I was playing at the top of the course.

There were a couple of normal helicopters, 2 marine corp helicopters and 2 Ospreys in the convoy going out towards Windsor and I only say just 1 Osprey come back and drop into Northolt. Don't know where they'd come from as the flew out but it was from the East towards central London.

The motorcade was pretty cool, loads of Police outriders stopping traffic followed by a load of black Escalade type cars, the limo and a couple of those boxy SWAT type vans. The Police had traffic control down to a tee - very proffesional.

I guess the motorcade always travels like this even if the President isn't onboard.

The interior of Air Force One is in a wharehouse outside Slough.
It might only be the one from the film though .
Filled a 7.5t box van .

Chaos yesterday at The Grove near Watford. President wanted to play golf with Cameron.....huge police visibility and I feel sorry for the poor regular golfers who were turfed off. Closed roads and police helicopter overhead all the time.

IT is very impressive. I saw a bit of GWB's advance party once at Teeside Airspirt in 2003 I think. C130 a couple of H60 or whenever they were - Like Blackhawks - and I think a Learjet/Gulfstreaam type of business jet.

This was a few weeks before the visit proper.

For all it is impressive, to me it is nothing compared to the discrete efficiency of the Met Polices Special Escort Group.

Little Kimble station tends to get a fair bit busier - lots of blacked out vehicles patrolling or loitering around the area... (given it's proximity to the country residence)

I agree, the American thing is all very impressive but the Special Escort Group really are something else to watch.

A pair of Osprays came thundering over my house at about 100 feet this morning near Newmarket. I assume they were on their way back to Mildenhall having been with the President at Stansted. Impressive machines to see!

So if all the kit is in the UK how does it get to Germany for his next visit before he does?
