He is still doing circuits. Has he been stood up?

One of these goes directly over our house at pretty much the same time every Sunday morning, heading back to Brize (I'm in Wiltshire), never figured out where it's coming from though as the trace disappears. Fairly noisy things when they get down low.

It's alled a 'Tanker Towline'. Unlike a 'Trail' (where you are tanking the fighters from A to B) on a Towline the tanker will sit in the race track whilst tanking. You aren't seeing any fast jets because they aren't sqwawking on Mode S.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Do they normally stay on track for 3+ hours?

Multilateration from multiple receivers can pick them up though, See the USAF F15s V22s AH64s C130s etc.

Interesting to note that apart from the voyager, all the other military aircraft above the UK at the moment are USAF. hehe

It rather depends upon the training task. I've sat on a Towline for 4 hrs before now (although that was fairly rare). AIUI from the guys and girls at Brize, the average Tanker sortie is around 4hrs total.

It can be fairly tedious being on a towline when you are not streaming the drogue. You also hope that the Loadie has ensured there's plenty of doughnuts on board!

As I understand it Flight Radar 24 relies primarily on an ADS-B transponnder linked to a GPS signal.

Multilateration relies upon timing the Mode S transponder transmissions that are being recieved at several locations to work out a position.

So if you have no ADS-B transponder (ie most military a/c) and you are not sqwawking Mode S, then FR24 will not 'see' you.

Here's another grab with the multilateration showing the Eurofighter HAVOC052 leaving the refuelling area. To the south of it are a USAF F15 and an apache.

I understand that at this time of year, whoever is sat in the front would probably be suffering from frostbite of the toes at the end of that little stint - the mates in the back would be warm and toasty though.

Not impressed that either the ADS-B aggregator has ignored a request to block this data, or none of the responsible adults asked for it to be blocked - maybe it was just a training sortie, but if not then any Johnny Jihadist under the 'X marks the spot' might well assume his cover and comms have been compromised.

A few years ago I remember sitting out on the lawn at White Waltham and observing a light twin footling about way up in the TMA, apparently lost. Got ops to call the relevant authorities, who stated they knew all about it, so didn't think anything more of it. Turns out they were taking happy snaps of this lot: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7190323.stm

Working nights in the city I often hear interesting things flying about in the wee hours.
Like the other night when a formation of 3+ choppers went over around 3am.
Then again it might've just been bored kids.....

Don't worry about J. Jihadist - after that amount of attention, he's probably wearing an orange gimp-suit somewhere conveniently deniable.

No...what *you* need to be worried about is when the Big Green Wobbly Cross starts to manifest itself over *your* house...and your phone starts getting hot for no reason.....
