Which is actually rather awful - interiors look like what caravans used to look like back in the 1970s! I expect the communal areas are somewhat less 'low-rent'?

I just cannot comprehend why anyone would want to spend (good) money to spend time on such a thing surrounded by six and a half thousand other folk being herded hither and tither - but I guess that's just me - horses for courses and all that!

What are those square hatches at the front of the bow just above the water line?

I have no idea. And I can't find a decent picture of them anywhere.

Anchor recess? Seems a bit low for that though.
Looks likely. Weird to have them so sort of square

regardless of how good these things are onboard, it is monumentally fugly. SS France was a beautiful vessel, even the P&O boats have some style, but these Royal Caribbean things are ghastly. Particularly from the stern.
Definitely very brutish in looks. Not graceful or elegant. Very few ships this size are IMO. EPIC looks like its channeling brutalism with its square, upright lines. For me the best lookers are the Disney boats. Mostly for the fact they paint the hull in that classic dark blue. Plus they play Disney tunes on the horn.

Still, they are fascinating bits of work and I would love to be involved in the planning/design of them. The kick off ideas meetings must be pretty fun right? In a "what can we go big on next?" kind of way?

Are there actually any companies based in the UK that do these boats or is it all French and Italian boat yards?

They do have a certain style about them.

Epic is very square. We nicknamed it the lego-brick.

I know they're not designed for it being cruise ships and not liners, but how would one of these behemoths cope if it got caught in the middle of the Atlantic in 'challenging' weather conditions?

also Finnish - Harmony's sister ships (Oasis and Allure) + several before that for RC were built in Finland.

We were involved in the inaugural for that ship and its a lot better on the inside than the outside.

And it's not brilliant in the inside laugh

What a horrid thing.

Like a prison ship with aspirations above itself. Run by Butlins. 8,000 people crowding around buffets and "attractions" or being squeezed into tight rows of sun loungers before shuffling off to their grief cabins while the under paid staff live and work in crap conditions. Then when bad weather is hit puke and bodily fluids spreading disease like the plaque in 17th century London.

One for those with dodgy hips, poor dress sense and angry prostates I think.

Dantes vision in boat form

No. Why would I pay money to go to something I hated? I've never been to Butlins or Pontins either. Both would be hideous.

I agree. Whilst I am fascinated by the size of it and the engineering, I look at all the "attractions" on it and think it looks comparable to going on holiday in the seventh circle of hell.

Couldn't agree more, the mere thought of going on it brings me out in a cold sweat. I suppose we're all different but I'll never understand why so many people manage to find pleasure from being stuck on a block of flats in the middle of the ocean without any means of doing anything different.

Whilst I'm not a cruiser, I feel the same about football and fishing.

Two of the most boring pastimes in the world and I really don't 'get' either pastime yes

But, each to their own and wouldn't it be boring if we all felt the same wink

If you are talking about the black recesses then they are the Anchor pockets.

We do quite a few cruises and have used as a way to see the world.

I hate crowds and queuing but when I think of a cruise ship as a very nice ferry at a very good price I feel so much better about it!

We've been to so many places that we never would have seen otherwise.

There's also a lot of difference between the different cruise lines. Some are party ships, some are more relaxed and some are certainly more heavily populated than others. Some I like and some I hate.

Stepping off in a new port each day is what we love.
