After posting April last year about how to add Sky to my home AV setup - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... - I didn't actually get round to doing it [it wasn't top of the job list]. Anyway, I finally gave it a go yesterday but have hit a problem and need some opinions.

So, I decided to HDMI the Sky box into my Onkyo receiver [as appose to the TV direct] as we're happy using the surround sound speakers 100% of the time when watching Sky. I was actually really pleased that hooking it up via HDMI alone is giving us sound - as all the equipment is getting on a bit now, I thought I might have to use an optical cable...but no, it seems all good [speakers and sub working fine].

Job number 2 was to plug in the PS3. I figured using the HDMI 2 slot on the receiver would do the job, but when I turned the PS3 on and [manually] switched the TV to HDMI 2, nothing! So, I needed to figure out if my PS3 was iffy or maybe the HDMI cable...I switched it over to HDMI 1 and bingo, it all worked. So now I know my PS3 is fine and it's nothing to do with any of the cables, I guess it's the slot on the receiver itself?

However, could there be another reason why the HDMI 2 slot isn't working, as appose to it just being broke? Could it be a setting on either the TV, receiver or PS3?

One other odd thing, when I switched my TV over to HDMI 2 [which I guess isn't necessarily related to the HDMI 2 slot on the Onkyo], the sound from Sky remained. Not sure if that helps?! Actually, am I wrong in thinking switching over to HDMI 2 on the TV was linked to HDMI 2 on the receiver, so that's my problem - hope that make sense?!?!

Here's a pic - blue cable goes to the TV, grey to the Sky box, IN 2 obviously the problem!

Sorry for the long message! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Input on the TV should stay the same and you just need to change the input on the Amp instead.

You can configure each button on the amp to control different inputs so you may need to define these using the menu button.

Eg. PS3 - HDMI 2, Sky - HDMI 1, DVD - CoAx etc

Depending on the age of the Onkyo, it may be suffering from an apparently well-known issue where the HDMI input selector board goes on the fritz. I'm suffering from this myself with a TX706 which has been working in the same installation for 8 years but now can't sync to input HDMI signals.

It's supposed to be due to some capacitors on the board which have overcooked, and a DIY fix is possible, but I haven't had the balls to undertake it myself yet (involves replacing surface mount caps).

Yea, as pmanson says no need to change the channel on the tv.

The amp is going to HDMI 1 on the tv, so no feed going to the HDMI 2 channel.

My TX-NR414 suffered this fate. Onkyo fixed it FOC - I think the scheme is still running...

I had the amp back within 10 days, I think...

The OP isn't describing this issue so this is misleading. Symptoms of the issue you describe is that it takes several minutes to lock onto the HDMI signal.

As for the OP's issue - to reiterate what others have correctly said, there's no need to switch the source on the TV as it takes a single input from the Onkyo so the TV can be left on that input.

ETA: The fix for your issue is fairly straightforward to do - this video explains it really well:

All sorted, thank you guys. I did as suggested (had a quick look in the instruction manual - which I probably should of done first) and now my PS3 and Sky box are all hooked up and good to go! Thankfully my Onkyo currently isn't one of the broke ones!!

Thanks again.

I had the same receiver, as stated you need to assign the input. I found using TOS links better for Sky by the way.

Just seen this thread, not related to the OP question but the comment below... My TX-NR509 suffered the audio/network and I must say Onkyo's customor service was very good. It was before it was a well known issue (so before that link was on their website), the unit was out of warranty but they still fixed it FOC and arranged the courier, including paying all the courier costs. One very happy customer!

Cheers for the info (and apologies for adding confusion to the OP's problem).

My issue is different from the other well-known issue that you and new-bloke had. I haven't approached Onkyo yet about it, they don't seem to have the same upfront support for my problem as they do for their network issue.

If I'm on my own I've researched the fix and watched a few videos like the one above, I just need to grow a pair and warm up the soldering iron...

Thing is that a brand new amp with the capabilities of my TX706 is now probably in the £300 range rather than the £800 that my amp cost new. Back then, a lot of the cost was in the video upscaler chip in the amp; but I guess these days the amps just pass through the video signal and let the output device use its onboard upscaling tech.

If you have the HDMI signal lock-on problem then the fix is really quite easy. I hadn't soldered before but took my time and had it fix in less than 30 minutes.

The joy of not having to wait minutes for it to start up cannot be downplayed!

Very informative, thanks for that.
