I'm selling my old bike on eBay and someone sent me a message asking me if I'd sell them the Givi rack and top box that are being sold with the bike and the touring seat (which admittedly is an extra).

WTF?

Why would I take off the rack and top box when it's all listed in the advert on eBay and I have bids on the bike for more than the starting price? I was hoping to avoid some of this stuff by not putting it on Gumtree...

You don't ask you don't get. There's always chancers, just have to ignore them/tell them to do one and move on.

Good luck with the sale.

I guess so - just weird that anyone would think you'd actually do that.

Why wouldn't you, they're not going to get you much more than the stock kit when it comes to a full bike sale but separately you could get an extra few quid for them.

Aftermarket add ons get next to no return when selling on unless you put the bike back to stock and sell them separately.

My thinking was that the add-ons makes it more desirable and people will buy a ready made commuter with all the bits rather than having to go with a bike without.

It then comes down to condition and mine isn't cosmetically pretty. Mechanically sound but not something that you'd want to take home to meet your parents.

This is pretty typical and no problem. Don't ask, don't get. If you were up for it, no problem rejecting bids to date, amending listing and adding that rack/box no longer part of the sale.

What annoys me is when you put something like "Will not split luggage" or "will not end auction early" or "will not ship outside of UK" and tts still ask.

Snap his hand off if they don't add anything to the bike sale.

I agree with the above. I was selling some old part recently, and had some doors that did not sell (but someone messaged me and had the wing mirrors alone), and a power steering pump which apparently no-one wanted (but one guy asked for the output pipe and another for the return pipe and reservoir).

So I got the money I was asking without actually selling the things I was selling. They went in a skip in the end.

If people aren't being total cocks, I'll entertain their request and see if I think it'll make the "main" item any less attractive to buyers. If not (or not much), fine, I'll take your money.

Interesting. I hadn't really considered it like that. I'll think about that for next time.

I'm wi the posters above - I reckon you'd get more for them sold on their own than as part of the bike so would definitely entertain a cheeky offer like that.

In fact, I was in the opposite of your position last week - a guy was selling a piece of studio equipment on EBay and mentioned that the winner was welcome to a second, broken model he had kicking about for spares. I have the same bit of kit, but broken so draped him a line and explained I wasn't interested in buying the working one but would love to buy one component from the broken one if he had it. £10 later, we're both happy!

There's a mate of mine who always manages to outfit whatever bike he has with all the toys, bought used on Ebay. When he sells the bike he swaps all the standard bits back on (which have obviously seen less use) which satisfies all the buyers who prefer originality, then he flogs all the toys back on Ebay, usually at a profit!

Well the bike sold at a good price complete with all the bits. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll do that next time.
