The Raptor was staggering. An amazing aircraft. The fluff as she took off was incredible. As was the display.
And then came the F35......
I am working at RIAT so I am airside so I am lucky enough to get an incredibly close view of the flying.
The F35 is an awesome machine. Big. Noisy, in your face. Nothing subtle about it all.
As she went into hover mode the noise, the vibrations, the power coming from the engine cannot be described.
It is fabulous.
Videos do not do it justice, you have to see it in the flesh to understand just what the 35 is like.
So I get to watch her again tomorrow & Sunday!!

Looking forward to seeing the F-35 at Farnborough. I did watch it validate during the week and it didn't seem as big or as noisy as the F-18 - but it may be because it performed a tighter display overall and didn't come as close to where I live.
The F35A is double the sound of the typhoon, it was LOUD! NJK44 said:

It didn't seem like that from my garden. People used to say that the Harrier displays were very loud as well - but I often thought it was as much to do with the fact that it "hangs about" in the hover, therefore placing its noise in front of the crowd for a long time. The same might apply to the F-35.
It will be interesting when I see it closer next week. I might change my mind.

From my POV, which is front row at RIAT, it took off on full afterburners, not in hover, normal take off, it was loud as f**k. The F35B is quiet and slow in comparison.
Just a quick reminder to anyone expecting to park in the pay-and-view field opposite the runway...you can't. It's completely closed. The Totterdown campsite field was closed by 10 am today as well.
We parked in the village and walked to the crash gate. Excellent day and free...which is nice. No traffic at all from Oxford via Westwell either.

Not sure but it seems like the F35B doesn't have afterburner? It didn't use it anyway.
F35B does have afterburner https://www.f35.com/media/photos-detail/f-35b-in-a...

F35 a or b not on the same level noise wise as the Typhoon. Much quieter, nice but certainly not anywhere near as savage as the Typhoon. I was there all day today about as close as you can get.People used to say that the Harrier displays were very loud as well - but I often thought it was as much to do with the fact that it "hangs about" in the hover, therefore placing its noise in front of the crowd for a long time. The F-35 display is not as dynamic as any of the Typhoon or even F-16 displays, because it is a very new type, and the guys using them don't have time to create complex high energy displays - they are deep in testing, and creating displays takes a lot of work.
Combine that with the characteristics of the F-35 engines, and you won't get the same kind of noise level or type.
The two F-35 engine options both have afterburners.
Today was a long, but enjoyable day for me. Gonna have tomorrow at home and go to departures on Monday.

You must be mad. The F35A took off and full afterburners right in front of me and was easily the loudest plane I heard all day. Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
