P47 crashed in New York

Getting back on topic, reading a few posts elsewhere, and this a/c had an electrically operated canopy, with an emergency manual canopy release T-handle, which wasn't used, so probably didn't have time (or decided not to) jettison the canopy prior to ditching, and only retracted the canopy the normal way before ditching. Eye witness reports say that he was seen to attempt to get out, but got stuck/caught up trying to get out before the a/c sank taking him down with it
Brave bystander dived in to try to help but couldn't and nearly lost their life doing so.
