Announcement made by the CAA today.

No flying below 500ft if the crowd are within 1000m of the display.

They've literally just shot UK Airshows in the face. Ruined.

The CAA are c**ts.

How come it's only in force until 18th August?

Because it's mid season it's a temporary notice. They'll make a permanent one in August.

Hmm, does that mean that at, say, Duxford, no aircraft can take off or land?

st that this is, they really didn't have much choice after the Shoreham crash.

People minding their own business were killed.
They've had to go hardcore so it can't happen again.

This looks like an interim safety notice, in article 3 it states they will formally ratify the regulations from 18th August.

I've just read your link to the CAA and yes it does seem extreme - however, they have to react somehow, and it seems the pilot of the Shoreham air crash has left them minimal options. The public just can't be put at risk - end of.

Personally, when I used to hold a CAA Display Authorisation, it was for 500ft base for aerobatics and 150ft for a fly-by.

At my initial evaluation at North Weald - in the Yak 52 rather than the Pitts, the DAE was unable to negotiate his usual arrangement with Stansted to nibble into the 1500ft CTA, so I was offered the option of flying the evaluation sequence down to 200ft under a Rule 5 waiver. Back in those days, I was flying the aircraft pretty much every day, and was current in flying competition aerobatics. I flew the evaluation sequence down to the required height, and was duly granted a DA.

I really didn't like it though - there's just too much green in the window on the down lines. I don't have a problem with 500ft as a base height. I could live without the 150ft fly-by.

The text of the Safety Notice as published would, however, mean the cancellation of the Red Bull event at Ascot - but I understand the CAA verbiage is such that they've actually confused themselves, and it may be re-issued with clarifications. As it happens, the first exercise of my DA was as the fluffer for Bonhomme and Jones in the Sukhois, and even though they've now retired to punditry, cancellation of the Ascot gig would be a pisser.

Yes, what happened at shoreham was BAD!

BUT, this is a HUGE knee jerk reaction. There's been no deaths in what? 50-60 years. This was a one off, isolated incident and I think it's ridiculous.

However, I'm hearing rumour that the CAA have worded it wrong and they will be releasing it again soon. I've also been told by someone that the head of RIAT operations has said its not true. How much credibility he has? No idea.

My fingers are crossed but it is not looking good for airshows in the uk.

In my experience, this is how the CAA work.

Something happens and they use an inch thick steel Elastoplast to make sure it can't happen again.

Is a shame though. I like watching the Red bull air races.

.....Get a bit confused

Are you saying that, because pedestrians were killed by that wheelie bin lorry, all wheelie bin lorries must now not be driven within 50 feet of any pavement?

An organised event at which people didn't choose to attend is a bit different.

Dustbin lorries tend to stop dead when they stall.
