New 6 part series starting this Thursday (21st) about steam trains, birth of railways, how they reshaped the country etc.
8pm on BBC2 I think.

It is with the people who made Wartime Farm, Victorian Farm etc. Entertaining and informative telly with some academics who come across pretty well.

I recognised the Victorian looking lady, let's hope it's worth watching!

A lot of the steam stuff they show on BBC4 has been very interesting, hoping it's more like that than the recent "Live!" stuff.

Watched this, pretty good. Fascinated by the effect of coal on wimmins' work.

Forgot to unpin the brakes, doh. Better that way round then forgetting to pin 'em smile

Interesting bits in it and entertaining, lot of shots from Beamish. Looks a promising series!

Excellent again last night, interesting about there not being enough wood to make sleepers from . Never thought about things like that.

I'm enjoying it too, some of the facts are amazing - like how many sleepers and crushed stone needed per mile of track etc.
It's easy to be romantic about it and wish you could go back in time to be there, but heck those were hard times.

BBC R2 had in interview with presenter Ruth Goodman one day last week.

It was supposed to be a face to face in the studio, but ended up being a phone interview thanks to her train being cancelled !

I completely forgot about this last night, they're repeating episodes 2 and 3 on Saturday afternoon. Although it seems to be heading away from being a series specifically about railways and more about the impact of the railways, it's still pretty interesting - I probably wouldn't have watched it had they billed it as a general history programme.

It's a social history as much as a train history. Often this side of things is more interesting than the nerdy nuts and bolts story - although I like the nuts and bolts stuff too.

It did - mainly about their working conditions and how their encampments followed the line as it progressed.
