Funnily enough the 'latest news' on the HMS Ambush section of the RN website hasn't been updated for some time...

Slight thread hijack..........

My wife's dad was Commander of HMS Artemis and that had a minor problem when someone left a hatch open during refuelling.......oops

It sank and was scrapped some months later yikes

Seems training hasn't improved in 40 years hehe

Its a fairly minor dent as far as these things go - as usual the USN does ship collisons better

She was back in service 2 years later.
Or design worse, doesn't meet to be much holding that conning tower there!

Not at all, I understand he was the commander at the time but not on board.

I'm sure at the time crew, officers or MOD didn't find it funny however it's a bit of a laughing point now when we chat at Christmas.

Strange how life changes, Mrs. HoHoHo's dad went from being a commander of a nuclear sub to selling flowers in a little town in the US.

Is it just me, or does "HMS Ambush" sound like a rather underhand kind of name, even for a submarine??? ;-)
Sneaky McSneakface?
Yanks had the right idea, name them afer fish:
USS Halibut, Shark,Thresher etc

"What is that Komrade Sonarman?"
"Nothing Komrade Kapitan, just a halibut, look ,it says it is one there on the hull"

There's no much need for the fin (sail if your a Yank) to be strong, its not watertight and dosent have to support much in the way of weight. Also the yanks don't have casings, so the sail is welded to the top of the pressure hull, which is unlikly to give much.

On sinking in harbour - the Yanks (again) managed to sink one before they even finished building it

I believe that American subs often have their forward hydroplanes fitted to their sails - so they need to be structurally strong.

These days it has sunk in, and I use port/stbd/fore/aft for everything, cars, planes, houses, horses, etc.
Why?
My ex-FAA uncle used naval terms for everything, floor=deck, toilet=heads, and all that mixed up with particular FAA slang stuff I can't remember. He was married to a Wren (my auntie) so I suppose the habits just stuck.

Port has four letters same as left.
All the short words go together :
Port, left, red
"There's no port left in the bottle" (and port is a red drink).
