Handley Page Hermes 'Horus' crash in 1952
Discussion
Amazing what comes up over lunch with the in-laws. News to us all ! My MIL's uncle was 2nd Steward on the plane that crash landed 1300 miles off course in the Western Sahara after running out of fuel. All survived although the co-pilot died a few days later. Found lots about the story on the web but can't find details of a Discovery programme that covered the story. Anyone help ? Sounds like a less dramatic version of 'The Flight of The Phoenix'.
I recall a TV programme, about 5 years ago, of a similar crash in the 1940s/50s. They eventually found a road and were rescued by lorries. Same one?
These things make fascinating stories. Via the bibliography in another book I came across 'Rescue Below Zero', the story of a Hastings and its crew that crashed in Greenland in 1952. They were eventually rescued by the USAF from Thule including a Grumman amphibian that landed on the ice.

Yes - it was. We are just trying to identify him from the photo. Apparently, after the trauma of surviving the crash the stewards did what any self-respecting Brit would do - made a brew for the passengers.
