Flight Sim - navigating around the UK
Discussion
Apologies in advance for a somewhat odd question. I've just started playing FS98 after several years (house move meant I found the long buried CD-ROM )
If I wanted to fly from Manchester to Heathrow which VOR stations would I use and which radial for each VOR? Also is there a website where I can enter the start / finish locations and it tells me which navaids I use?
Thanks as ever

If you want a serious challenge this http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/srd/SRD_... combined with the SID and STAR charts from the UK AIP specific aerodrome section and the U.K. ATS route map should do it. Good old fashioned flight planning.
Put this one up elsewhere.
www.skyvector.com
Has all the maps on it. If you click on world Hi, lo or VFR.
Use it at work to make sure we have the Sigmets drawn up correctly.

A good CPU is the main thing.

What kind of PC is needed to play FSX properly ?
And what extra controls ?
Depends on the level of detail, but a monster of a machine is all I can suggest. And what extra controls ?
I have an i7 4770k overclocked to 4.5Ghz, Nvidia 780, 16Gb ram and I had FSX on an SSD. I could still see single digit frame rates over large cities and processor temperatures around 70 degrees (huge cooler fitted) with more complex add on aircraft and scenery, even the default scenery with everything on max caused problems.
I have switched to X-Plane 10 its far better as less of the burden is placed on the processor, though you do need a good graphics card.
As far as extra controls are concerned it comes down to what you want to fly. If you want to fly mainly GA aircraft and or Airliners then you may want a Yoke. I would go for the CH Elite Yokes (the more expensive one has rudder functionality built in but I'd go for the slightly cheaper one and buy a set of pedals) as the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke has an irritating dead zone in the middle (part of the firmware on the USB controller, its not a calibration or hardware issue). If you want to fly a mix of aircraft then i'd go for a Joystick (that's what I did. If you want to go all out and spend a fortune then you can't do much better than the Thrustmaster Warthog, though you will need to spend more on an additional set of rudder pedals (you will be in it for £400 or more). In contrast to the Yoke Saitek make some reasonable flight sticks with a twist grip rudder (rudder control is a must imho).
As far as VOR's go I'll have a look at some old charts when I get home and post the locations and frequencies you will need.
If you take off from manchester and fly roughly south east you should be able to pick up the Honiley VOR/DME 113.65. From there you should be able to fly to the Bovingdon VOR/DME 113.75 and then pick up Biggin Hill 115.1.
Bear in mind you might have to track the outbound radial for a while before you pick up the next station. Look up radio navigation on wikipedia and use google maps to give you some rough headings.
