It will be interesting to see if this actually happens.

How man Mach 2 passenger planes are on the drawing board?

The word "startup" and "boom" worries me.

It reminds me of any number of Kickstarter products - someone with a great idea, loads of enthusiasm, and some really nifty renderings based on what they think it might look like. But no real design of the vehicle fuselage, engines, control systems, never mind testing, validation, evolution or shelling out the money on the hidden stuff. The fact that the rendering looks like a smaller Concorde with 2 engines says a lot. I'm not even sure a 70% scale Concorde would have space for 2 flight crew to sit side by side.

Hmm. Back in c1900 flight started out as very clever/very rich blokes tinkering in sheds. Then for the latter half of the C20 it went corporate. What with this 'mini-Concorde' and all the private space initiatives, are we seeing we seeing a return to very clever/very rich blokes in (admittedly shiny) sheds?

There will be no civil supersonic craft again until -

a) the economics make sense

b) the impact of the sonic boom has been attenuated

NASA has been working on the latter for decades.

Is there as much need nowadays for the rapid trip across the world?

With wifi now being accessible on planes, does it not make more sense to go in luxury and able to do work and chill if required?

Use of video conferencing has surely revolutionised international companies meetings and reduced importance of face-to-face interaction?

Of course there is sense. Despite the increase in telecomunnications, more people travel than at any time in history - and there is no sign of that diminishing.

If a sensible, economical and environmentally bearable supersonic mode of transport arrives on the scene, it will find users.

Or the tree huggers stop whinging about sonic booms. Allow SSTs to go supersonic overland and the economics are a lot more attractive because there are more routes available.

I liked the bit that said affordable followed by $5000.

Have you been on the receiving end of a sonic boom ? The last time I was it had me grinning like a little kid but I don't think I would want it happening on a daily basis ....

No big boom supersonic flight. NASA project - http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-begins-work...

That's what I said. Being subjected to multiple daily sonic booms as delivered by Concorde would not be good. Nothing to do with tree hugging.

I get as much of a kick hearing a plane smashing through the sound barrier as the next plane geek - but only as a rare treat. I wouldn't like to put up with it every day.

I have said many times here on PH that a civil supersonic aircraft will return to the skies at some time in the future. However, I have always thought it would be as an executive jet and not as an airliner.

Looking back, it's amazing that they didn't do more research into how the boom would be received BEFORE starting work on the Concorde.

In 1958 nobody gave it a second thought. It was only in the late 1960s that care for how we affected the environment became a significant issue.

I put it down to this -

It's got three engines now (or will have)!

I saw a version of this story a few days ago with a picture of the prototype. Now there are two/three different versions of the prototype. Just one thing gets me: to me a prototype is a working version of what ever it is. Its not ready for production/sale, but it basically should mostly work. They've actually just got some CAD renderings (at best) or really just pretty pictures as far as I've seen so far. Though i suppose theres a few more hours of Tuesday for them to wheel out a prototype to go in America. If it just sits there and can be touched (but not do anything) it'll just be a mock up.

The prototype they say will fly in 2017 is a 2/3rd (?) scale 2-seater, rather like the Fairey Delta 2 was modified to flight test Concorde's wing design. Not really a flying prototype of the actual airliner at all.

Of course, if you want to get to New York sooner, you could just book an earlier flight...;)

Wont happen,

Only place it can go supersonic is over large oceans due to the sound, that's what stopped concorde from revolutionising how we travel the world, it wasn't allowed to do an LA-NY route or any routes across Europe, it limited it market and scope, if they could deal with the sound problem then sure. But supersonic has very limited appeal for commercial flights.
