I've been on the Iran Air Sp's to Teheran in the 70's.
And if I'm not mistaken they are still, flying them
Edited to add.....
Boring fact about the 747SP......the tail fin is higher on the 747SP than the normal 747

re the bigger fin, I am guessing it is because of the shorter fuselage (shorter lever arm = less fin authority)

Only ever seen one in my 1976 Observer's Book of Aircraft. That's how old they are...

Used to see Iran Air and Pan Am ones flying over Dublin at 30,000 feet or so during the mid 1970s. The SP was built in fairly small numbers (around 40) and was introduced by Boeing to try and stop some of their existing customers buying longer range DC-10 30s.re the bigger fin, I am guessing it is because of the shorter fuselage (shorter lever arm = less fin authority)

I hate to think with sanctions what condition they were in

The control surfaces were simplified, fuselage shortened and tail enlarged, it had a longer range than the 747 100 it was based on.
The wiki article is pretty good

Am reading a book on the development of the 747 so hopefully I will get some further details, there are so many variations of 747 there is also an SR model, and it isnt a slightly faster version with bucket seats, stripes and a rev counter but a short range version for use in short flights for the Japanese market,

Well, I find it fascinating anyway
