Not sure if these are cool or not, but definitely got an air of Thunderbird 2 going on so I think it passes the Gerry Anderson test smile

Penguinracer specifically said "piston engined airliner". So - the Britannia is out under that criteria.

Under the "cool big aeroplane" however, the Britannia is most definitely in - as is its big brother, the Belfast -

Oh Eric you have so got the cool thing now.....love these and Britannias, and CL44s

Used to see the Heavy Lift Belfasts fairly regularly flying out of Southend. Wiki says Shorts only ever built 10 of them.

Here' some youtube video footage:

Probably in the pub after work after four or five pints.

It would be an impressive model though.

I'd always go with this as the ultimate piston engined airliner -

SNAP smile
This is one of my favourite Connie pics. Must have kept the passengers entertained.

It's a Lockheed L-1649A Starliner. Although evolved from the Constellation and Super Constellation it had a completely different wing - which gave it a longer range and was faster. That's why I posted it as it was the final development of the Constellation family. Lockheed have it a different name because they felt it was significantly different.

Meh, a rose by any other name... a Mk24 Spitfire has almost nothing in common with a Mk1, yet it is still a Spitfire... I would hazard a guess that the L1649 is closer to the original Constellation than the Mk 24 is to the Mk1

wink

I go with what the manufacturer decided.

It's a bit like the Boeing 707 and 720 - superficially very similar but under the skin quite different.

I remember when they did the tanker conversions on the VC10s for the RAF at Filton.

IIRC there were 3 or 4 VC10s in each of the Brabzxon hangars.
