I'm currently in the market for a new car and my shortlist includes the 12C Spider. Hoping for some advice on what I should be looking for when considering this model - either in terms of must have spec items or potential issues?

Cheers.

Mclarenlife has a good buyers guide.

I'd suggest a car with lighter wheels and iris2 with some reasonable mileage (and arguably a later car depending on price) to have ironed out anything. And make sure you have at least a year's warranty or have that cost priced in.

12C spider is the ONLY car needed on any shortlist unless you have a bigger budget for a 650S spider

Absolutely - great car. My only real concern, not being a long time follower of the marque, are the potentially risky residuals.

That's historic and mainly due to the poor launch of MP4 12C which was rushed to market IMHO.
The harsh journo reviews of the early car really hit early adoptors of the marque and first owners a little unfairly as the car did get 3 FOC upgrades that addressed the areas of concern.

By 12C spider this was all sorted but the mark of the poor launch was still there hitting values. That's history now. The car has hit rock bottom, prices stabilised and probably came up a tad in 2016.
I think they are a fairly safe bet now at the current price range.
Rather have a McLaren than one of the over inflated prices of its competitors.
If there is a price correction Ferrari's will be more effected than a McLaren that's already too cheap IMHO.

The McLaren is in a totally different league to a F430 and an equivalent 458 spider is probably £40k more.

Go figure

Nothing specific to 12c spiders ...other than check the fitted bags are under the tonneau cover

General 12c stuff

- get iris 2 car
- get car with warranty
- check for gearbox leaks
- check for working lights (condensation issue)
- some suffered from wing corrosion
- paint can be hard to match - look for non matching panels
- carbon interior a must
- sports exhaust very desirable
- parking sensors useful (camera not)

- one years factory warranty is £3,500
- service every year c£1,500

Black ones are the fastest biggrin

Unfortunately, the few cars that are available currently have the aluminium trim and not carbon.

If it's really such a big deal, it should be possible to retrofit at the dealer. Not convinced it's a must have either as a few years ago it wasn't even stupid costwise to get it done (not sure about now admittedly) and you pay less for a car without so no difference when sold.

the real must haves imo are warranty and service history, not spec related.

No huge rush I guess - just been splattered by the first gritting lorry of the year!

I definitely think the carbon trim has the edge but agree it won't be a deal breaker.

To be fair it's a personal choice - if you have seen ones with aluminium and are happy - go ahead

The single most important feature, it a small rear window that opens - so you can hear the engine - fortunately these are std on Sypders

I guess what you really want to avoid is pulling the trigger on a car only to see a car advertised later that had a spec and colour that really floated your boat.

You have time on your hands with the winter approaching. I'd advise googling 12C spider and looking at the various standard interior specs and exterior colours, different wheels, levels of carbon etc etc. As the cars are getting older and going outside McLaren dealers I can see that the Indy's don't know what is standard and optional spec, may be to your advantage.

When the time comes and your spec comes up be prepared to move quickly.

Worth giving Alistair Bols a call, he may know of cars coming on the market. www.alastairbols.com - he helped me out.

Good luck, for the record Black may be fastest on Spider but McLaren Orange is on a Coupe.

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post. I started looking for a Mclaren a short while ago, I had a lot of concerns regarding cost of ownership and general issues that the cars may have, but after chatting to a chap on this forum and Alastair Bols my mind was put to rest and I bought a 2014 12c spider. All good so far, very usable, very exciting car to own. I should have dipped my toe into Mclaren ownership a long time ago.

Thanks

It is Fire Black, has a sports exhaust, which is great, carbon on the interior and a few other bits. It is not a massive spec car but i think it has everything you need

Think the OP has bought a 650S Coupe now
