I'm constantly watching the market of 996's to see what pops up with the view to one day taking the plunge. A particularly eagerly priced c4S has caught my eye so looking to get your thoughts, from the ad it sounds a decent car. No engine rebuild but its priced so keenly i can get it rebuilt for about the price one with a rebuilt engine woukd cost... i've checked out the seller and the reviews aren't great tbf but to me it may look worth a punt???

Thoughts?

It is that price for a reason, the advert states the car is on Vcar

"VCAR or V-car (Vehicle Condition Alert Register) is a database used by accident service and insurance companies in the United Kingdom. It is a list of vehicles that have been reported as being in an accident that caused damage. "V-car registered" may mean the vehicle is on this list."

So it is a Cat C or D

Please don't take this the wrong way but these are not cars to buy, maintain or run on a budget!

You'll need to be looking at £20k+ for a good one.

I wouldn't buy a bag of crisps from Motorhub, let alone a Porsche.

The best car I've seen for sale is a black c4s with Hartech rebuild on trader. 23k or thereabouts.

I bought one of these new, sold it 4 years later and instantly regretted it, so after a year I bought another almost identical one. It then took a 997tt to tempt me out of it.

They are absolutely fantastic cars, and personally I love the design with the turbo nose, wide body and the lovely red strip across the back. Just beautiful, and I suspect will be a future classic. And they usually come with a good set of options too.

I would buy another one tomorrow. I'd look for as good a car as I could find, with good history and one that's clearly been looked after. Then I'd either take it to Hartech or put a few k's in the bank for an engine rebuild, just as insurance in case it does go. But bear in mind that the majority of these engines have not gone bang, and there are quite a few 996's with over 100k on the clock now. Just look after it well, change the oil yearly, warm it up before opening it up and don't rag it!

Good luck with the search, and I hope you enjoy it nearly as much as the two I owned.

I'd be tempted by this if I didn't really want a 997. Think it's a bargain of the condition stacks up.

Sorry to resurect this, but what are peoples thoughts on the linked car? Highish mileage but has the all important hartech rebuild plus new clutch and tyres? Seems decent compared to others at same price with a bit less mileage but having had no work done ?

I like it. 80k is nothing especially with new clutch and rebuild.

The only thing missing is sports seats but they are £850 ish from eBay the last time I checked. Then paint the hard-back and centre console with body colour and Bob's your uncle.

Ditto. Its a ste ad but car is worth a look. Then phone Hartech and ask them what they did to it. Be aware there are many different levels / costs of rebuild from H or anywhere. EG if its a bore scoring rebuild, they can do 1 liner, 3, or all 6. Plus lots of other options while youre there - IMS, various others. A proper full Hartech rebuild is £10k but the work might have been far less extensive.

Looks like a great buy IMO (assuming everything checks out).

The ad says £9000 Hartech rebuild so it must have had a fair bit done. As you say the best way to check is to call Hartech themselves.

That's my thought, only issue is it's a 3 hour ring trip for me so sounds like a call to Hartech before hand could confirm whether it's a good option.

I did email the dealer over christmas to get a few more details but they weren't very forthcoming, maybe they thought as it was via email I wasn't that serious which is fair enough. Time to seriously think about it.

Only a 3 hour round trip? wink
Most of the cars I've bought have been much further away than that, most recent purchase was an 11 hour round trip to north Wales!

I'm not too bothered about travelling if I'm going to buy (buying my last car from Bournemouth from Sheffield) but just to go and view it's a bit far really, just need to check a few things out before.

Not sure it's got a Sports Exhaust; tips seem wrong for that.

And it doesn't have the Sports Exhaust switch on the dash either. I've seen quite a few advertised with a "sports exhaust" which turns out not to be the switchable PSE, maybe a Dansk or something?

Good to know, thanks. It's things like that why I've asked peoples thought's as I don't know the minute detail of the 996 yet.

Normal PSE location is top right I believe, but my 996 C2 52 plate has it bottom left, see attached - so possible this car may have it too... mines factory fit & on the sticker.

Style of tips has nothing to do with PSE. The oval and figure of 8 ones are interchangeable.

I wouldn't look too hard for PSE because:
1. The standard boxes are made of chocolate and will have probably rusted/seams split by now.
2. There are loads of aftermarket options available. They won't be switchable but will give you the nice flat 6 growl.
