Hi guys,

I've seen this 1m for sale at Stratstone:

http://www.stratstone.com/search/vehicledetails/us...

48k miles, white, pretty good spec (?), £40,995. It's very recently been dropped in price from £41,754.

It seems fairly high mileage to me, but does it sound like a fair price?

I'm going test drive it today, will report back.

It seems to have disappeared off their website. But if it's the one in Leeds, still showing on A/T, then I'd say the spec all looks pretty standard to me.

IMHO, it looks a bit expensive for the miles. But that really depends what you want to do with the car. If you're planning to use it sparingly, hope not to lose much and punt it on in a year or so, then I'd be looking for a lower mileage one, even if it costs you a bit more money up front. There'll be a bigger market for it when you come to sell. But if you're planning to use it lots and keep it forever, then no harm buying a higher mileage car... but I'd be expecting to pay rather less than £40k for it.

Anyway - enjoy the test drive!

It is the white one in Leeds, yup. I actually put a small deposit down to secure it pending a test drive, which explains why it's disappeared from the website.

What do you reckon a fair price would be? The highest mileage 1m on AT is 62k miles on at £38k. Obviously, it's not sold but based on mine, that's £3k depreciation for 20k miles, which is seems good to me.

I average about 5 miles a day on my commute, 6 days a week, so that's 1.5k a year? Normally, I'd have other journies to do but I think I'd limit my time in the car, keep it a year and see what the prices are doing. I'm hoping that I'll get nearly all my money back after a year, but I'm not sure if that's realistic or not. I'm also unsure how easy these things would be to sell on the private market. A high sticker price is one thing, finding someone willing to pay it is another!

I dont think you will lose any money on this, and if you really are doing about 2-3K a year than its not really going to be high miles.

There will always be the micro mile cars, and these seem to be listed for sale at £50K+ which is silly for a £39K car from new, and i know they are limited run, but there are a lot of better cars you could buy for £50K.

Anyways if you look at what they cost new, and then what they have retained in value for what is now 5 nearly 6 year old car, its incredible, i only wish i'd bought one when my local dealer offered me a build slot, i could have used it for 4 years put on 40K miles and got my money back, there are very few modern cars you can do that with.

If you like it try and Bid them £38K for it, they can only say no, but knowing stratstone they will say 'its priced' to the market...etc etc Good luck.

Hope you enjoy the test drive.

Andy

Is it also worth mentioning there are also 2 cars cheaper with similar or lower mileage for sale, both black.

One at UBER GT £39950 46K miles.

One at Sandwell car sales £40975 42K miles.

Depending how far they are from this stratstone you could try use as bargaining cars (if you dont want black, and like the white)

However worth adding the Strastone car will have been through prep and have a 1 year AUC warranty, the others wont.

I'd take main dealer prep with a pinch of salt. But I'd agree that the AUC warranty is peace of mind that should be factored in (BMW warranty costs circa £500 p.a. to extend).

I know some of the dealers went out of their way to buy in 1Ms in anticipation of big demand prompted by the M2 launch / first deliveries. I know this because a main dealer paid strong money for my car, put it up for sale at even stronger money and then dropped the price to within spitting distance of what they paid before it sold.

I only say this because, despite what I said above, you might find they don't feel they have much room to move on price.

Not sure if it's the same car as I haven't seen the advert, but I was offered a VO car with same mileage for £35k a couple of weeks back, the owner already had a trade bid of £34.5K on it - could be the same car if it's now with a trader ? I would have preferred to buy private but they where few and far between with the exception of a couple of out of budget low mileage ones. The white car at Leeds has been slowly coming down in price and was on my list of possibles when I was looking. Good luck.

This might be a bit of a long shot, and it all depends on how bad you really want 'that car' however.....

Knowing the strastone/pendragon group - the longer they have any car the more pressure they will be under by senior managers to move it on, (The fact they already dropped it means its been in stock more than 30+ days) so unlike some independents like UBER GT, Alexanders, Redline GC motors etc who will often just sit on stock until they find their buyer large dealers like stratstone dont or should i say cant!

Its your risk, as it could of course sell, but i think your in a strong buying position at a quiet time of the year and bear in mind its not exactly a cheap car you can get a 14 plate M4 for this money, so it needs its very own enthusiast buyer willing to pay strong money.

Personally id bid them, walk away, watch it, go back bid again between xmas and new year when its totally dead! (I've done this before and got £2K of a car i was watching) dont look too keen :-) unless you dont care want it and will pay their asking in which case fair enough.

Good luck

Andy

This is the car:

It's AW not VO.

£35k that's a cracking price, why didn't you got for it in the end?

Sorry should have been clearer, I was offered the 62k mile car that is currently advertised for £38K on AT for £35k prior to it being sold to the trade. Came very close to buying it but decided to pay a bit more for something with lower mileage/owners.

The trick is not to want it too badly smile If it goes to someone else, another will be along soon.

I'd also try and get a second year on the AUC warranty using the higher mileage as leverage.

Thanks for thinking of me Matt. The car has been sold looking forward to the next few years in something different and not so mileage sensitive.

So I took it for a spin, aside from being pretty uncomfortable driving a manual after years of sports autos, I loved it! I accepted the price, for various reasons I won't go into now, and should be collecting next week!
