Serious lack of planning / risk assessment there surely (unless the wires were moved)?

From the video it looked like the camera system was hung from the cable car. you don't move those around in a hurry.

when I was undertaking my flight training, one of our instructors (ex fast jet & retired airline pilot) told me a story about his squadron carrying out a training exercise in a middle eastern country a long time ago.. They were undertaking some very low level flying in the middle of a desert - the only building was a small hut with some steps leading up to it with a steel hand rail.

Apparently one of the squadron thought he would scare the guys in the hut & carried out a very high speed pass at low level. In the process he collected the handrail.

Aircraft landed safely, still with the handrail folded around the leading edge of the wing...

It would probably have been a lot worse if it had, as the cables for those are a lot heftier.

The camera was running on its own cable system. Presumably, as it was temporary, nobody told the pilot about it...

Indeed, this is a system that travels around to the various FIS skiing events, i.e. temporary. Looks like a comms error between the organisers and the Swiss AF.

My error, on first viewing I saw the guys doing repairs on the cable car pylon and thought that was what had been damaged but the commentator says the camera cable, once severed, had been deposited over the cable car cables.

Actually having read some reports on the Swiss papers, TV (SRF) had informed long before the Air Force about the installation of this system and it's height. What is not confirmed yet is if the height given by SRF was the actual height of the installation or if it was installed differently -in which case they would be to blame- or if it has been a pilot's error who flew lower than planned.

Those type of camera systems tend to use rope rather than steel cable. It's a lot safer if it snaps and weighs significantly less too.
