I think this photo is pretty cool - the first Class 66 fitted with ETCS in the UK moved today to RIDC for further testing following fitment in Doncaster.

LNER locomotives during a performance test in London in November 1937.
Just a publicity pic.
Whn you say 'just' what do you mean by that, it's a great image.
Well it is a bit cheesy. It's not a 'performance test', as originally suggested.

I've been out on my first ever Class 69 today (never been on a 56 either)

Can layout is a mixture of 66 and 56, definitely noisier than a 66 and vibrates more but wasn't as bad as I was expecting (heard through drivers etc)
But is it an 'Incredibly Cool Photo'?
In my book, not really, but maybe each to his own.

Is this really cool?

The pagoda adds some interest but the black smoke is put on for dramatic effect. This is a bit different, with the food drying in the sun, and avoiding the 'usual' front three-quarter shot with train as main subject.

This is simple but shows off the elegance of Walschaerts valve gear. Poetry in motion, as it were. Mind you, I'd just cleaned it all, so I might be biased.

In the top photo the star on the smokebox door really appears to shine out.

Despite being a GWR person I like the bottom image, is it Britannia, she's been in the news a bit lately.

I'm reminded of a Range Rover on 22" gangsta alloys hehe

Britannia is my favorite loco, and I'd never noticed the rims before.

It's 'Cromwell' actually, taken some years back.

Very nice... I remember the BR Standards, mostly at Waterloo but I don't know which engines ran routes from there.

I'm rather a BR Standard fan. The SR had quite a few. 73/75/76/80/82 and 84XXX. Good engines and good to work on.

As I'm spending a while sitting at my pc, does this count as cool?

IMO not really, more 'QI'. It does provide an unusual perspective, not least because I ended up there rather smartish as a result of the train's arrival with little warning. Other photographers had to take similar action...

Is that the class?

What the engine numbers would have been, ie starting with 84 (or whatever) and with three numbers after. All those beginning with a 7 would have been tender engines and with an 8 tank engines.

Actually, the SR did have two 'Britannias' stationed at Stewarts Lane for the 'Golden Arrow', 70004 'William Shakespeare' and 70014 'Iron Duke'. But that was in the Fifties, and I reckon before your time (and mine).

Thanks, didn't realise the 7s were tender engines and 8s tanks.
I think when I used to see the Golden Arrow at Waterloo it was a Merchant Navy at the front.

The rail looks a bit dodgy.

The Golden Arrow went from Victoria. Must have been another train. :-)

Not the best… but good enough for 40-45 mph, I guess. :-)
