Good film that, River Plate.

Do modern boats carry anything similar?

I've been trying to find out what was happening for ages since they announced they were raising it.

If they don't win the world cup, is that the consolation prize...?

I think this is unlikely due to the damage sustained during the scuttling , they have removed the radar and gun sections ,

was a very impressive ship , shame the cinema version used a triple gun american warship.....hollywood !!!!

I doubt it, if Hollywood were involved, the USS whatever would of sailed in and save the R.N ships from certain destruction with a lethal barrage of Audie Murphy

I think he meant that hollywood used an american battleship to represent the Graf Spee.

Yep, the US battleship used to portray the KM Graf Spee looked absolutely nothing like the proper small pocket battleship, for a start, the Graf Spee didn't have 2-tiered main armement, and it was a tiddler of a ship, really a cruiser with larger than normal main guns.

But Audie Murphy was a genuine WW2 Pilot and fighter ace. Its only Hollywood gay jewish directors and producers get it wrong. Cos war is not really their bag, more nail varnish and nice dresses.

The most interesting bit is why they have the swastika covered. Is it to prevent glorification of the Nazis or their disclaim their histrorical existence?

So it has taken 2 years and loads of specialist equipment to get a six foot lump of bronze? Why didn`t they just tell the Pikeys it was there - 20 minutes and a transit van would have been their best effort.

PC'ish-ness seems to have spread globally now.

I'd like to see one of the high seas fleet ships at Scapa Flow raised before it's too late (if it isn't already).

PS. Program of the finding of HMS Ark Royal (off Gibraltar) on BBC1 Sunday 8pm, it was torpedoed in the Med and sank on the way back to Gibraltar and it's been lost for over 60 yrs. From pics it also seems in good condition, unusual for a lightly built aircraft carrier.

Hollywood??? .....It MAY have been an American ship that was used, but the film was British, made by Rank Films Ltd 1956. Hollywood indeed.......tsk tsk tsk!

thanks, pies - I've read that too, and it's the reason why I'm asking. Should'nt they then better hide Blair, Mitterand, Bush, Schröder and Mugabe's faces before their pictures appear in public? I mean, they're all symbols for politics that someone somewhere (still) holds strong feelings against.

I don't think you can compare any of those people to the Nazi regime. Doing so belittles what the Nazis did.

Are you saying that any coverage of a symbol that is not one of the Nazis belittles what they did?
