The Southend engines aren't airworthy, (neither are those in the Wellesbourne Vulcan).
When 558 was being made
airworthy every possible source of engines was examined and it was concluded that the eight engines they had were all they could ever use. It's a question of paperwork more than engineering.
They can't even refurbish them. RR possibly could, but the cost would be prohibitive even if they were willing.

Frustratingly the answer is so simple... Smaller modern engine, de-rated to mimic thrust of existing and ballast added to offset any weight difference. May need to fabricate up sone new intake tracts, mounts and fuel feed systems but that wouldn't be a show stopper!
There you go, issues sorted, who's going to sign it off at the CAA... There's your problem... Just the same as sending Abu Quatada to Jordan, nobody in authority will put their name to it in case it all goes pear shaped...

What about the Vulcan at Southend? I believe she's got 4 running engines, and apart from the odd fast taxi run, is idle. Could Southend donate an engine?
XL426 had 558's old engines.Vieste said:
Google blackpool airport i spy a vulcan next to the hanger.
That was scrapped a few years back.Eric Mc said:
If the Vulcan was fitted with modern engines it wouldn't really be a Vulcan any more. Apart from its unique shape, it also has a unique sound which could not be replicated with modern engines.
I read the famous howl was caused by the inlets being very long, got to be worth a try with modern lumps Eric ;-)XH558 facebook said:
Engine Damage Update.
The failure occurred yesterday in the two port side engines (1 & 2) on the ground as the aircraft was easing towards full power at the start of her take-off roll. She is now back in her hangar where the technical team will investigate the problem. Our initial thought is that the symptoms are very much like those experienced when something is ingested by an engine so we will be investigating all possible sources. We would like to thank Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) for their immediate assistance and professionalism yesterday. We should have a more detailed report for everyone fairly soon.

It would seem from the latest update that the engine failures were potentially caused by FOD ingestion. As sad as it is that it happened to the Vulcan, it could've been a civvy passenger jet that ingested whatever the FOD was. I suspect that could potentially have been worse.
Still doesn't make it any less depressing, especially if it has ended the flying life of XH558.
Wonder if VTTS have a case for compensation from the runway maintenance division of RHADS?

XL426 had 558's old engines.I would hate to see 426 sidelined to a pure static role, but if it keeps another in the air, a worthy cause?

RR can't...... tooling was scrapped back in the mid 80's IIRC.The differences with the marine spec Olympus's would probably preclude the set up for these being used for a airworthy 202....??
