IIRC it's about 10 TON lighter than when it was in RAF service, that'll help a bit with slow flying abilites.

Nah, an enormous and lightly loaded wing, nearly all of its airframe provides lift

Indeed & the lower wing loading from the weight reduction helps too.

hadnt realised this was quite so tracked by people! Apparently it turns up at Cranfield fairly regularly...missus got some good video the other week....its just utterly bizarre how slow they can fly it...and how quiet it is as it drifts in over the runway - then the noise when they then turn it up to full is quite astounding! awesome machine
Really?
I only live about 8 miles away and had no idea!

Just seen the Vulcan route up the coast at Blackpool :-)

he is now routing east over the Pennines towards Elvington so keep your eyes peeled if you are in the area ;-)

Poor quality photo, but it flew directly over us when we were stood in the yard. About 5 miles east of Elvington
on the contrary, I think that's a good photo
I agree.

It could almost be the flash from the big bucket of instant sunshine that it was originally designed to deliver.

I noticed the Vulcan's last flight this year is making a flypast a several airfields along this route:

Does anyone know what the flypast entails? Is it merely flying over or will there be any circling or touch and go?
Secondly, as it is heading from Filton to Cardiff, will it be coming over the Clifton Downs? They would be a far better vantage point than the outskirts of Filton Airport but I dont want to risk missing the route of the plane altogether!

Thanks,

Matt

This Saturday afternoon 29th September, providing weather conditions and aircraft serviceability allow, XH558 will take off on a 3-hour sortie to commemorate Sixty Glorious Years of the Avro Vulcan as she makes a tour of various airports near to sites that played a significant part in their development or service life.

1. Doncaster
- Bitteswell
2. Coventry Airport
3. Birmingham Airport
4. RAF Cosford
5. Gloucester (Staverton)
- Cheltenham
6. Filton
7. Cardiff Airport
8. St. Athan
9. Ross-on-Wye (Memorial)
10. RAF Halton
I can only associate a few of those 10 that have any significant relevance to the Vulcan confused

Where's Woodford, Chatterton, Scampton, Waddington, Coningsby, Cottesmore.....?

Tested grass strip operations at RAF Halton. They landed there, possible to test emergency landings. Not sure if they took off again as there were 2 B1s there for a long time before being scrapped.

There was rumours, on the types retirement, of putting one down at Sywell on the 1000m grass strip for a gate guardian. No idea how true,
but it came from a good source!

Probably already had a anniversary flyby this year. These flights have been happening quite regularly

I called Staverton flight ops this morning & asked what time they were expecting her. They said 4pm (ish) depending on factors such as the weather etc.

I know Filton isnt too far down the M5 however i would think that 4.30pm down there would be at the latest.

Not sure when VTTS will be updating their website so decided that calling Staverton was the easiest thing to do. Apparently they are opening three overflow car parks tomorrow to cope with the expected number of people!

Plod are also going to be patrolling the Golden Valley by-pass to ensure that people dont park on the verges that border the airfield.

This flight has generated an unbelievable amount of interest even though she isnt displaying - at Staverton she is just doing one, or possible two, runs along the track of the main runway.

No doubt though that people around here will complain about the noise...... Idiots.
