Got caught up in the getting out malarkey yesterday and did not want the same to happen today. We left early but by god the roads in the area were jammed packed with cars parked up in hedges and up trees with people hanging out of every dell and dingle.

We stayed to the end yesterday but as we were in early we were right by the American Museum. Lesson learned.

However due to the Lancaster's being there we were warned to get in early today. So we ended up back at the American Museum, we asked to park nearer the gate but no joy. Nearly two hours to get out yesterday and with more people, we bailed earlier but we did have a long drive back to Wales.

Steep learning curve for us as we have not been to many shows but there we are. We did enjoy both days and had a good look round all the exhibits (probably missed something).

We got waved into an overspill area next to the officer's mess on arrival. When I asked why, the soldier/traffic warden on duty said it was becasue he'd told the kid on the gates to direct any smart looking car over to him. Result: M11 5 mins after getting back to the car. Glad I washed it on Friday!

I was sitting in my back garden enjoying a G&T when these flew pretty much overhead towards the display - benefit of living a stones throw away from Duxford! Red Arrows yesterday were pretty good too.

You lucky sod........

We decided we wanted to see the Vulcan and Lancaster in case we did not get a chance again and this was the only chance for the Lancasters we had so stayed two nights in Huntingdon (closest not on silly rates). But the long trek home and Saturdays faffing for nigh on two hours to get out the car park meant we decided to get out early. Seems they got their act together and we could have stayed later with a realising back home time. Never mind.

The other pain was getting across country with the Catthorp interchange and A14, M5 roadworks etc. it was not a good trip coming up the M4 M25 then the return through the Sunday mayhem.

In another universe, we could have had this. There was a genuine project to sling Gnats under the wings of Vulcans - as parasite fighters -

I did think the rest of the day was dull. All of the action was too far away.
Slightly off topic but we travelled up from Sussex to Duxford yesterday but without tickets there was no chance, bailed and headed home - disappointed. Halfway home I had a quick look online at timetables and diverted to an empty field just outside Goodwood ....... we had the 2 Lancs over head for their Revival display - bonus points from girlfriend too for not going home to sulk and persevering.

ps. We'd seen 558 at Shoreham a couple of weeks before so all Avro boxes ticked this summer smile

I saw an Anson fly for the first time this year so that was a "new" Avro box ticked for me.

Wow, like cruise missiles but with pilots!

I reckon once detached, they would stay detached - and being couped up in the tight confines of a Gnat cockpit for a few hours would not be much fun .

IIRC one version of the proposal was to remotely control the Gnats and fit a nuke in the cockpit - cut price Skybolt wink

2 Buccs reputed to have flown (unattached!) under the wing of a Vulcan on a Red Flag exercise, Former Colonials successfully claimed destruction of Vulcan, which then peeled off to allow Buccs to continue to target.

Edit: missing word

We went to Duxford both days, joined the A505 at the same time each day. Saturday no delay whatsoever and were inside by 9.30. Sunday it took us three hours to move 3.7 miles. Displays mostly the same both days but the Vulcan (Saturday) and two Lancasters (Sunday) were well worth it. Loved it when the commentator kept mentioning the need to conserve the Vulcan's engines then, as it flew off at the end of its display the pilot floored it - awesome!

Conserving the engines isn't about using less power, it's the way they're used.

I noticed a lot more use of the air brakes this year

Do you think we'll get a few barrel rolls before it's grounded? This years display seems a bit more adventurous than some previous ones.

In what way? Genuine question as we'd already had what I would call a couple of 'power climbs' but the departure was a real show stopper.

I think that a few rolls wouls be a fitting finale on the last seasons shows. As it doesn't overstress the frame (so I believe) would the CAA allow it into the display routine?

My understanding (from comments earlier in this thread)is that the engine life is made up of a number of factors. It would seem running hours are less important now than number of throttle movements in which case a handful of throttle is better than feathering it back and forth.
Stand to be corrected.
