The fact that there has been no prior planning or build [no I do not count a picture on an internet page as proof of intent] is a concern for the ultimate future of '558.
I have my own thoughts about the administration of this project but will keep them for another day, hopefully my fears will prove unfounded...

Piss up and brewery are often words I like to use for VTTS administration. The fact that there has been no prior planning or build [no I do not count a picture on an internet page as proof of intent] is a concern for the ultimate future of '558.

There have been a few cock ups certainly, but that's going a bit far.The fact is they did get a complex four engined jet bomber flying on the civilian register and kept it flying for several years. Something many people (including me) thought was impossible. Certainly more of an achievement than a piss up in a brewery, or posting snide remarks on internet forums.

Sad to see '558 grounded permanently, but at least someone had the forethought to put her back into the air for a good few years before she suffered a fate similar to many others that rotted away or were cut up and 'recycled'. We've also got the RAF's decision to keep her flying until 1993 to thank for her being in sufficiently good condition to even consider a return to flight in private hands. I remember going to Biggin Hill to see it during the RAF Vulcan's "Final Display Season" in 1992 (I think). Such a shame that the BBMF wasn't expanded to become an 'RAF Historic Flight', with a few significant cold war jets, etc, added to the roster, but budgets don't allow for luxuries like that, and eventually the historic aircraft would have outnumbered serving ones. Fingers crossed now that she ends up in the right place to ensure her long term future, and not somewhere with an insecure future where at best she'll end up marooned in a museum, smack in the middle of a housing estate, and at worst, forgotten and unloved until the (gas) axeman arrives.

I visited the Midland Air Museum a couple of weeks ago and it is depressing to be reminded just how much work has to be ongoing to keep the exhibits even just tidy
They are doing all they can but I watched a historic Armée de l'Air Mystere being repainted by volunteers
Silver paint on a yard broom (OK just for dramatic effect, really they were using paint rollers), quite an unedifying sight but essential to keep her looking nice and keeping the Ally worm at bay for a while
