Problem is the Vulcan is so popular and as it approaches its last flights more and more people are going to want to see it. Next year no Vulcan so the traffic will be much better!

Part of it. Part is not being able to organise a piss up in a brewery from what I understand. And stupidly keeping the Vulcan to last. Asking for trouble.

Mind it was good for me. I got to do my second dog walk in the field next door to Robin Hood, so was able to see the Vulcan depart.

No real problem getting in at 9:30am, but leaving was a complete pain.

Special display though, couple of moments brought a lump to my throat, not least the missing man formation with the Gnats

I spent a large part of that display behind a pair of binoculars. Because of the dust of course.

I have never been to an air show where it was as quiet as when the pass with the gnats went by. Missing man was particularly poignant.

The howl when 558 came in on her own was wonderful, and her display majestic. I struggled through it but I didn't want it to end. I can't describe the feelings towards a machine I felt, as she climbed away for the last time, then hung beautifully on her side, for what seemed like an eternity, before rolling level and disappearing into the haze.

Regarding the show itself, it is obvious they weren't expecting so many people. We had a bit of a queue to get in, but we set off early and expected it. We were into the showground before 11. The aircraft seemed very close, which was fantastic. No major problems with anything during the day, and we expected a big delay getting out. What else would you expect from a busy show, at an airfield, in a tiny village? We wandered around for an hour after the flying ended, and watched the aircraft leave. We ended up sat for an hour or so in the car park. Ho hum. I'll be there next year.

Here is the album of photos my Dad took from the whole show:

With Southport, the Vulcan display was at 2pm. first display was at 1pm. We hit the back of the queue out from Southport at 9:30. We got parked up on the beach just after the Chinook finished it's display at 1:15pm. again, dont think they were expecting the crowd numbers. plus each cabin scanning the tickets only had 2 scanner between 2 queues, plus they were only taking cash for those paying on the day. so took ages to get through to the parking areas.
While some left after the Vulcan, the majority stayed til the typhoon closed the show (it had been scheduled for 4pm but was delayed til 5ish)

I've chased the Vulcan all over the country and never got a shot of her against a blue sky...until Saturday! biggrin

As for the rest of the show, well we left home at 9am and hit Church Fenton around 10. Once in the queue it took us another 90 minutes to get into the car park, which i expected to be quite honest...

The show itself was superb. Food wasn't an issue for us as we always take our own, but they need a lot more toilets for next year!. There were quite a few displays i hadn't seen for a while and the Vulcan / Gnat formation was a welcome "surprise".

I knew getting out would be chaos after the Vulcan display, so we stood and watched most of the planes leave, had a look at some of the cars on display then strolled back to the car and relaxed for an hour. Someone finally lost patience with the queues and broke down a locked gate near us, so i took full advantage and got out PDQ biggrin

HUGE thanks to Nogbad! - I will now be at Gaydon with my two lads on Sunday for the penultimate HX-558 display (Nogbad! will be at Shuttleworth - the last display)

I have a feeling its going to be a very dusty day..... cry

On that point, what IS it about the Vulcan that invokes such emotions from grown men? Plenty of other iconic aircraft (eg Concorde) have been and gone and didn't cause this much blubbing.

I have a feeling that I'm going to have to go and see it when its at Robin Hood - how much is it going to be for a fast taxy ride?....

I've also got a pair of park & view passes including one car pass for the Gaydon event if anyone wants to go. I'm off to Shuttleworth instead.

You'd probably need to pick up from me in Southampton as I cant guarantee I could post in time.

Drop me a pm if interested....

Have done - smile Missed out on seeing her at the Revival due to the fuel leak issue, and would give a small non-vital organ to get there Sunday.

I reckon it's different with the Vulcan as it's been a challenge against formidable odds to a) fly again and b) for this long.

On another note, anyone got 3 spare tickets for Old Warden Sunday??

Two for anywhere would be good, having been at Shoreham and Goodwood (as well as standing in fields under transit routes on aborted sortie days) we've struggled as much to see her as it has been for VTTS keeping her airborne!

I wonder what time she's displaying at Old Warden on Sunday, as I have to be in Herts on Sunday for a few hours, am thinking I might be able to catch sight of her having also missed out at Shoreham and Goodwood. I imagine the roads around OW will be ludicrous with people who haven't got tickets for show parking up nearby, so if it's looking like I might be able to match timings, I might chuck the mountain bike in back of car to park up further away and cycle closer.....

I know a couple of JLR employees - I asked if they could get me onto the JLR site (next door to Gaydon motor museum) - apparently, all JLR employees have been ordered off-site by mid-day, as the entirety of the JLR carparks are being used for the expected crowds

There will be no parking on most of the approach roads, and I've been reliably informed that this will be heavily policed (tow-aways?)

Last year for the Vulcan display, my JLR friend said it took three hours to get out of the JLR site - this year can only be significantly worse

I think I'll be taking a packed lunch AND dinner, as well as having a wander round the museum after the display - I HATE sitting in stationary traffic

FWIW, for those without tickets there are some dirt tracks at the south west end of the old runway - might be worth trying to get close, but I reckon a million others will have the same idea, so best get there early and set up camp
