Conserving the engines isn't about using less power, it's the way they're used.
In what way? Genuine question as we'd already had what I would call a couple of 'power climbs' but the departure was a real show stopper.
The real killer on the engine life is the number of throttle movement cycles the engines undergo - by leaving the engines at a single power setting the life is extended. One way they are doing this is to transit between shows at higher altitude - flying lower necessitated more throttle movements to maintain a steady speed due to the interaction between thrust and the aircraft's drag characteristics at low altitude.

Do you think we'll get a few barrel rolls before it's grounded? This years display seems a bit more adventurous than some previous ones.
I'd say so, they airframe life is going to outlast the engines

I'd say not a chance. CAA would have kittens, and throw the pilots on hundreds of charges.

It's the last time they'll ever get to fly a Vulcan, I'm not convinced they'll care what the CAA think.

Most XH558 aircrew are serving airline pilots as their day jobs.

I think they'd care a great deal if the CAA revoked their licences.

2 Buccs reputed to have flown (unattached!) under the wing of a Vulcan on a Red Flag exercise, Former Colonials successfully claimed destruction of Vulcan, which then peeled off to allow Buccs to continue to target.

Edit: missing word

Edited by V8 Fettler on Monday 15th September 19:59
The FRA/FRADU lot at Hurn apparently used to fly their Dassault Falcon 20's out to 'attack' RN surface ships with a Hawk tucked close in under the wing. The Falcon would peel away after 'missile' launch leaving the Exocet missile (Hawk T Mk1) to proceed toward the target. All done to test the RN ships' air defence drills.

I am, as ever, happy to be corrected if this turns out to be less than accurate, as I cannot recall the source of the story to check the accuracy.

Spotted it too (from afar). The Props & Pistons event takes place at Sywell this weekend. However, there is no mention of the Vulcan appearing either on the Sywell or VTS websites. Does anyone know for certain if/when it is displaying there?

I think I'm right in saying that this Cold War tour flight that 558 is doing today is their last flight of the year.

Just seen confirmation that the Vulcan is not appearing at Sywell this weekend. Today's event may have been one of those lucky competition winner flights. I went to see a similar display at Sywell couple of years ago.

That Cold War thing looks like it's tomorrow, so I might at least get to see her fly overhead.

Central did you know the Vulcan was doing the winners flights at Sywell today?

From Twitter this morning I got the impression it was just flying near Doncaster.

The Vulcan flew very low right over my house near Clitheroe on Sunday. I heard a very noisy plane so went into the garden to have a look just in time to see the underside of this beautiful aircraft.

5 minutes later and the 2 Lancasters flew over to make my afternoon.biggrin

It's a real shame nothing has flown over what's left of Woodford.
