The Brits are infinitely more skilled than the Yanks + if your actually close to the ground to see what's going on you tend not to attack your own side.
And if you are close to the ground you can get your a$$ shot down by any knucklehead with an AK-47, as your infinitely superior Tornado pilots found out in DESERT STORM.Tornadoes were lost in Desert Storm NOT because they were caught by AK-47 fire, but because they were tasked with the most dangerous missions of the war i.e. laying runway denial munitions on Iraqi airfields using the JP233 dispenser. This entailed flying low and fast along the length of the runway ejecting the bomblets along the runway. Unfortunately, this ensured that Iraqi AAA could just place a wall of flak right into the path of the Tornadoes ensuring thet they would be hit. The Americans didn't do these missions, not because they wreen't brave or skilled, but because they didn't possess a weapon so effective at rendering an airfield unuseable.
As soon as these missions had achieved their aim, the Tornadoes reverted to a medium height bombing role, assisted by target marking Bucaneers.

My point exactly, the AK reference was figurative but no less true. At 50ft you are vulnerable to every weapon the enemy can aim at you, from 9mm on up.
The USAF has a weapon perfectly capable of interdicting a runway from 20,000ft. It's called a GBU-10. In more modern times JDAMs work just as well. Reference ALLIED FORCE.

Then why were the RAF specifically asked to carry out these missions?
From what I know, GBU-10 actually destroys the runway. JP233 DENIES the runway by leaving unexploded munitions laying about - thereby leaving the runways useable at a later date if and when the enemy loses possesion of them.
I'm not saying JP233 was a brilliantly conceived piece of kit - but it was the weapon of choice of the commanders in Gulf War 1 when it came to preventing the Iraqis from using their air bases.

I've spent a few hours taking photos of aircraft, here are a few of mine.
Not amazingly cool, but I hope you like them.

But at the time they did not - laser guided bombs were in the minority in 1991, with several packages being rushed into use so they could be used. In fact, most of the Tornados shot down were hit while lofting dumb bombs onto their targets at low level. Only one was lost while delivering JP233, and that was after the attack had been completed successfully. The USAF has a weapon perfectly capable of interdicting a runway from 20,000ft. JP 233 served 2 purposes, the first section dropped weapons to pierce the surface and erupt underneath to destroy it, the second was to deploy anti personnel weapons to injure repair crewsFrom what I know, GBU-10 actually destroys the runway. as you were
supraman....
im impressed with your photo's.....im a huge fan of the typhoon/eurofighter.....
maybe you can find me a pic....in 2004 i was in the states, where a saw a flypast of 4 planes.....it was at the pepsi 400, daytona.....one of which was out of this world.....it was MASSIVE, compared to the fighters next to it, like 10 times the size of tornado......anyhow...it was black, of stealth apperance......but more inportantly had 4 SQUARE jet outputs.....with 3 rings on afterburn........i did take a photo, but can't find it...would know it if i saw it again !!!
if memory serves me it was a lockheed f10 if there is such a thing
