The SE5a was to the Sopwith Camel what the Hurricane was to the Spitfire, if my childhood memories of reading Biggles was anything to go by, wasn't it?

As flown in Aces High by Peter Firth & Malcolm McDowell and Edmund Blackadder & Baldrick in the Blackadder Goes Forth episode "Private Plane", since they used the same film sequences from Aces High smile

Kind of.

Most pundits think that the SE5A was probably the better plane - being less likely to turn you over.

From the WW1 aircraft flypast of Henry Allingham's funeral. My knowledge of WW1 warbirds is zero, but I'm sure that someone will be along in a moment to fill in the gaps. Wonderful looking things though, aren't they? smile
SE5a replicas.
Slightly disconcerting that the shutter speed has "frozen" the props. They look like the engine isn't working...

I'm building a model Camel at the moment, during my research I found that apparently the engine torque was so bad that when a 90 degree left turn was required, some pilots would opt for a 270 degree right turn instead. I think it's one of those aircraft where it is dangerous for inexperienced pilots but excellent in the hands of experts.

But how many 'experienced' pilots were there in 1917?

And in almost exactly the same position on the ones to the left!

I think that B-17 is actually the famous Sally B. She was painted up as Memphis Belle for the 1989 movie and has carried the colours ever since.
I was bound to get at least one wrong!
Isn't that a B-25 in the picture? When I was walking home from work on Wednesday a WW2 bomber flew over, wasn't sure what it was so did a bit of research when I got home and came to the conclusion it was a B-25, and then shortly after saw the F1 test at Duxford with what looked like the exact same plane I saw fly over.

And to tie it all in nicely, a B-25 was used as a camera ship in the film Memphis Belle, piloted by an amazing chap called Dizzy Addicot who designed the car in my profile! nerd

Having studied your car photograph in some detail (with the aid of a cd case as a mask): In my opinion, from the front edge of the wheelarch forward, that Mr. Eccles, is a damnably fine looking motor car.

Are they early Mini door hinges by the way? Look very similar to the ones on my Mini Van (which is now trapped forever in a garden garage).

Yes, early mini door hinges, and to tie it in even more, the prototype was based on a modified mini van ! biggrin
It's a slightly modified Mini Jem which was directly spawned from Addicots prototype the DART. It's a tiny little thing, and with a 1300 mini engine up front can be made to go scarily fast.

Did you build it yourself?

Pretty much. It had been raced, and when I bought it , it was pretty much ready for the road, or so I thought. It actually needed quite a lot of work, and over the 16 years I owned it I rewired it, had it retrimmed, new engine and box, all the running gear rebuilt etc.
It's a proper 60's kit car where nothing quite fits as it should so you need a degree of cunning to get things to work!

My hat's off to you: Someone who builds a car rather than who talks about building a car.

Now you see that wasn't a hard landing, it was a "firm" landing due to the need to stop short for the only taxiway/turnoff that could accommodate the aircraft. And YES they did showboat to the photogs positioned to the left of the runway too. OK?

Out of curiosity, does anybody know what the PA was about to say at the end there?

"They've only got 2 reversers on the inboard..."
