Paddy_N_Murphy said: atched those 'Ramming' clips on YouTube. f king Mental. As you say, how on earth can someone with a Captains Ticket actually think it is a good thing to ram another boat - never mind that it is in Artic waters and more than likely to end up with themselves worse off? O/T could the Harpoon be used in anger by the Whalers to any good effect on the Steve Irwin. Below the water line for example I can just imagine that furore.... Personally, if they have done that, as well as having a history of it, they are open to whatever defense measures another vessel feels it can take. They are not only throwing extremely slippery substances on the vessel, (decks tend to be slippery most of the time at best, this stuff is like having hydraulic oil all over the deck), but then ram the vessel risking people sliding over the side, and survival time is not very long. The surprising thing to me is that this show is portraying these people as right, and correct in their actions, which I find utterly disgusting. I would have no issue with a vessel protecting themselves using whatever means they felt reasonable.

Go on..... am all ears. I personally don't mind that lot - at least they (usually) have experience on their side. It is so 'dangerous' because they are a bunch of cowboys... Nothing more, nothing less. Curious here too... I like Deadliest Catch (although will admit to knowing less than f k all about boats, I get sick in a bath fer chrissake). They all seem to have been doing it for years, and appear to do a very dangerous job as safely as possible under the circumstances. Is it all nonsense then? No, it's not nonsense at all. What you see is what they do, even if they do over dramatise it. However, it is the basic safety they severely lack in. You seldom see a lifejacket, (and yes, you can get small lifejackets, we use them when working on the back deck), and for a small boat, their equipment is far too easily thrown around the deck. It is dangerous because they make it dangerous, not the other way round, especially with the equipment available today. Not to mention fatigue. I think I saw an episode where the crew had been on deck for over 24 hours with only 1 or 2 breaks. So tired they could hardly respond to questions, yet playing with heavy equipment... Doesn't sound safe to me. Back on topic I don't agree with whaling. But if you were the whalers wouldn't you just fire a few RPGs into the other boat? I mean it can't be that hard to buy them in international waters etc... OK - you've all started me off now... Fatigue - kills more people at sea than anything else because folk make bad decisions when tired. International regs are for a minimum of 10 hours of rest in any 24hr period over 2 periods of rest, one of which must be at least 6hrs long. (so minimum requirement is one x 6hr & 1 x 4hr rest period). USCG regs are the same, though there's a waiver US fishing vessels. Don't know my way around US regs, so can't find the regs for fishing vessels. Couple the lack of sleep over weeks, with rough cold seas, with gung ho fishermen, with a complete disregard for safety and it's no wonder it's one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. I'm sure they are great fishermen, but just the basics of safety would help. For example, I've seen numerous episodes where someone has stepped into the crab tank opening and nearly breaking a leg. They of course need these tanks lids open as it is impractical to keep them closed, but FFS they are invisible on a dark wet deck - paint a circle around them in shiny paint so the poor fecker has got half a chance of spotting it. Captain Sig Hansen - if you are reading this you can have that idea for free. Bet you've already got the paint on board too. PS Don't get me started on that Tall Ship Cronicles programme...

Anyone remember the first program, where all these utterly inexperienced people launch their rib, and it capsizes, purely because of lack of experience. Ridiculous.

I have Googled and YouTubed looking for that, as I saw the clip in the Opening Gambit and was curious. So far I can not find. Come on PH - seek, seek.

I agree with all the comments about the First mate, complete dick head,i thought that even before they set sail,he gave a talk about how dangerous it was going to be,just the way he was talking wound me up,pity he didnt mention he could steer a boat or take basic instructions, and he acted like a 2 year old when the only qualified crew member (ex us navy)drew up a plan to lessen the chances of death when dropping the rib.

It;s amusing that they constantly talk about instant death if you fall in the water, and yet they purposefully rain an oily substance on the deck of the whaling ships, which could easily result in crewmembers going over the side. The Captaisn attitude when asking for volunteers to board the sjip was disgraceful as well... Nothing but an attention seeking idiot.

Oh and surprise surprise, the gobby t t with the Bandanna, Mr number 1, was to blame. (then hide)

Deadliest Catch looks like smallish companies trying to do the job on a low budget, yes they are awake 30 hours etc, but how much use is a life jacket when the water is cold enough to freeze you before a rescue could be performed?
