Shock......!

http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/2012/05/...

In shocking news, German officials have decided to proceed with the extradition of Captain Watson to Costa Rica.

The warrant for Captain Watson’s arrest was issued in Costa Rica in October of 2011, curiously close to the time that the Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR) filed their civil suit against Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the United States.

I saw this thread in My Stuff and thought "What have they sunk now!".

This I didn't expect! Can't say I'll be sending their desired e-mail. Just wondering if we should send one supporting Germany in removing the guy from the seas.

Happened to be catching up on it last night.

Some gnarly weather in the one where they were seeking the Yacht with the EPIRB.
Obviously fking idiots with the broken rib and half the crew getting Hypothermia earlier in the series.

I have just downloaded the latest series on to my iPad to watch while I'm away at sea.
They are complete tits but entertaining.

Wonder what they will do about the boss going to jail....

Could you imagine any vessel you are working on having such woefully prepared boat crews?

To be honest, the rules and regulations should take care of it and ensure not everybody is a complete muppet.
Only way around it possibly it to have an unprofessional captain....?

I'm the FRC/Workboat driver, and if I had to deal with people like that, there would be no way I would get on the bloody thing. When they capsized it in one of the first series, because the 'experienced' seaman had the bowline slack was unreal. Having numpties with no ability in the boat itself was just as bad. Unreal.

Simply staggering absence of even the most basic common sense. I have no experience of deep water boaty stuff whatsoever but it seems criminal to me to have left two rib's behind and zoom over the horizon.

It is compelling iewing in a macabre way though, I just remain convinced that sadly someone is going to lose their life, and no doubt it will be the fault of the whalers not fkwittery seamanship.

Particularly in that weather, for that length of time. Criminal behavior.

What i couldn't quite get understand is exactly how they managed to get 5 hours away at 15 knots: isn't that 85 miles away? Why on earth would they be that far?

Now, as I said, I know nothing about these things but simple maths just suggest something isn't logical. That's just ludicrous.

TBH - the leaving the Ribs behind the horizon 'should not' have been an issue.
Ribs can travel far and wide - it was more to do with the fkwittery after the fact.

No thought to Juryrig the boat or make progress in the one fast boat running laps or ... or.... or.....

Stupidity of the Rib crews IMHO of not having the wherewithall to resolve the problem.

Sitting there - IMHO was the most stupid thing.
Leave the dead rib behind and crawl at 10kn to the mother ship would half the time. A rib loaded would happily / safely do 10 kn......

Sitting freezing for 36hrs - dheads.

Always have a plan B, C, D and E at minimum.

It was stupid letting the Ribs go so far from the main ship, leaving them in danger.........that would never happen in the Royal Navy......oh...errrrr. smile

Not heard of the ICR.

Just an organisation created to let the Japanese fks continue whaling in the name of 'science'. Hope they lose the case.

They say they don't kill 'endangered' whales, not that I think being endangered matters much, still means they're fks.
But it's under the name of 'science;', which makes it OK.rolleyes
Wiki said:
"In 2008 the ICR was criticized by anti-whaling proponents when photographs released by the Australian government showed pictures of the ICR harpoon ship Yushin Maru killing several different whales, and a mother whale and her calf being taken onboard the Nisshin Maru for processing (see photo, right). [21] The Australian government used that opportunity to voice their disbelief of the ICR's scientific research claims:
"The scientists who have considered carefully the material that has been put forward by Japanese scientists in the past, making some claim that their whaling is scientific, have found that it is without foundation. ... You do not have to kill a whale in the Southern Ocean to gain a deeper understanding of it."
—The Hon Peter Garrett MP, Australia's Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts"
What does your second sentence mean?

Because if you are going to complain about non-endangered whales being killed, then you must surely complain about any other animal being killed. We farm millions, upon millions of animals, fish, birds, purely for our own dinner tables, so where is the balance? Is it OK to keep these critters couped up just to be slaughtered for our own use, but not OK to kill something for our use after it has had a life out in the wild?

It seems to be more of an emotive argument, rather than one of actual reality.

No I must surely not. You can make a thread about farming if you like, that is not what I am discussing.
What balance? What does that mean?
Seems to me to not even be an argument, you can't discuss column a, so switch to column b.
I do not have an ad hom like 'lentilist' to use in this arm waving 'argument', not that I would use one.biggrin
