Wow... didn't think my thread on Retro Rides would crop up here.

WR963 is not out for the count, the youtube links show the engine run we did on 27th Jan this year! Do not let the flaky paint decieve you. She's in a lot better condition than she looks. There is a small but dedicated team working on this aircraft at least once every week. I can only get down there fortnightly due to work constraints.

The thread on Retro Rides will be updated as more gets done. On the cards for this summer is a complete repaint... so she shouldn't look quite as 'unloved'.

Regards,

Ric

Duxford has had a Mk3 for years. I presume it is that one they are refurbishing.

Isn't there one at Newark air museum? Although I may be slightly confused as that one is not a tail dragger.. I think it had a nosewheel. Did some Shacks have a nosewheel?

MR3 was the nosewheel version.

MR1, MR2 and T4 were all taildraggers.

Not bad, but it's a bit innaccurate. It only lists full airframes, not partial ones too, it misses the two T4 surviving fuselage/ cockpits amongst other.

T4 WG511 at Helston, Cornwall.
T4 VP293 travels around the country. I don't know where it is currently
AEW2 WL756 is at Caernarfon, Wales
T2 WR967 "the Dodo" was on the dump at Pafos
MR3 WR971 at West Walton Highway, Norfolk.

There is supposedly a cut up South African Mk3 still around, but very heavily chopped about.

And everybody forgets about this one. XF700, barely clinging on, on the Fire dump at Nicosia.

There's a nose section over the road at Duxford.

Is it painted white? If so that is probably T4 VP293 "Zebedee" formerly of the Strathallan collection. It travels around, so is often difficult to keep track of.

There is a Shackleton at Newark, it was still there about a week ago, when I went for a look round. It's parked at the side of the Hastings, where it's been since the mid 1980's.

Yes, MR3s had a tricycle undercarriage.

The MR3's were also fitted with a pair of jets (on the back of the outer engines) to help on take off.

Only on the Phase 3 aircraft. The South African aircraft didn't get them which is why they have been able to keep going for so long. Putting two Rolls Royce Vipers on the Shackleton MR3 caused a few more issues with the life of the spar than anybody first thought. That's one of the reasons the last few AEW2 lasted so long. WR963 at Coveentry was one of the older of the bunch and has nearly 15,000 hours on her.

How come they didn't just put turboprops on? Endurance possibly?

Would have been a much bigger engineering task.
