...Why??????
So as to be the answer to the question "who the hell owns that ugly boat?" when parked up with hundreds of more traditionally styled superyachts in the Med.

From what I have heard about the immense cost and limited lifespan of kevlar sails - it is entirely possible that running sailing boat A actually under sail could be more expensive than paying for the fuel to run a boat its size on diesel. Can somebody who knows about big boats please comment on whether there is anything in that or whether it is a high end urban myth? Is it masted because that is actually more expensive to run?

Also - looking at the really big boats like Dilbar, which is bigger by displacement than the largest US navy Destroyer: is their a definition of the point at which a yacht becomes a cruise ship?
Here's the joke. Kevlar, being a brand name for Aramid fibre (Du Pont) is used mainly on racing yachts where lightness is critical. Does this yacht look light to you. The owner will use Kevlar to save weight then fill it with gold taps and a marble bathroom. Treated well kevlar will outlast polyester based sails. Carbon Sails are sensitive to flogging which is the sail flapping when tension is eased off.

It is likely that this yachts sails will incorporate solar panels to harvest energy from the sun

I don't know how... but I'm really starting to come round to this, it's like something out of the Fifth Element - would like to see it with the sails are up
Boat A has grown on me since seeing it in perspective with other boats and landmarks, maybe the new one will as well...

WRT the swimming pools, does anyone know how they are managed under sail?

Is there a watertight cover that extends over them, or is some or all of the water valved out into a lower reservoir, to be pumped back in once the yacht is upright again?

So when you want a swim you have to send the helicopter up to fly around?

If I had enough to own it, someone would be employed to make sure I never had to consider such a problem hehe

Say what you like about A but it looks like no other boat afloat (whether you think that's a good or a bad thing).

So many super yachts all look pretty much the same it's nice to see something that really stands out.

I agree, it's been sat outside my office all week so had plenty of time to consider the styling. I just don't get the hate. Sure it's a little ugly, but I think it's great that something different was built. So many yachts seem to stick to conventional styling, which is just a bit boring.

Trying to think of a car analogy with this being PH and it's a bit like a Pagani Zonda, ugly and very different to the supercar norm, but more interesting for it.

It grows on me the more I see it. Ok the interior is very Russian Oligarch (unsurprisingly) but as a design I really like it.

I also love the fact that someone had the balls to shell out massive money get exactly what they wanted even if it didn't fit in with what 99% of the market would want. A bit like someone specing a new Ferrari bright green despite the problems come resale time. That's real wealth.

The big yachts have dump/holding tanks for the water to be held in. The pool drained/refilled as required. While smaller pools can be left full while sailing, even a moderately sized pool or jacuzzi has a massive free surface effect and the water ends up everywhere. Even in "calm" seas.

I saw this heading down the Thames this morning and recognised it from this thread, thought you might be interested. Apologies for the rubbish photo, my phone camera at maximum zoom isn't great!

Some of them might have baffles rather than pumping it out - works for the cruise ships.

There's a cracking little runaround here in Zakynthos called TITAN. Just watched a hatch open in the side and a tender dropped out. There were another two still stashed in there!!

Still my favourite yacht.

Alfa Nero remains THE super yacht for me.

Closely followed by Octopus and The Maltese Falcon.
