A white ensign? Massive etiquette failure(and illegal) given it's not one of Brenda's grey war canoes, unless the owner's donating it as a Britannia replacement and the Daily Mail haven't picked the story up yet. It is lovely though.
Sorry hidetheelephants, members of the Royal Yacht Squadron can fly the white ensign.

Indeed, we used to fly one smile Then moved to the RAFYC so now fly blue ensign with wings and roundel

RAFYC considerably less up their own arses than the RYS and used to have a bigger car park at Hamble

Spotted this in Cape Town last week. Didn't get the name - any ideas? Note the on-board sailing yacht - can't be many with one of them, surely?

Not wanting to cause offence but certainly when I was serving the RAFYC had a very bad reputation for being up their arses. Although that was about 5 years ago so maybe all change.

But yes members of the RYS are permitted to fly the ensign.

Why would it anchor against the Belfast out of curioisity? Is it literally the only place itll fit?
I hope the IWM got a decent wedge out of them for parking there.
Quite a regular birth for larger vessels. Last time I was nearby a cruise ship was alongside.

Proper that. I like, rather than a gauge trinket
Still owned by Paul Allen of Microsoft (and owner of Octopus) I believe.

Some are up their own arses without a doubt, we struggle to fit in with the hardcore old school. Still not as bad as the Royal Southern. When I was a kid RAFYC was cool as they had a table space invaders machine in the front lounge smile

I actually really like this.

I've no doubt the interior is just as gaudy and 'Russian' as motoryacht A is but while I wouldnt call the exterior beautiful it is striking and unique. I bet under sail it looks quite a sight. Like a massive modern dhow.

Most yachts these days look similar so something that breaks the mould is a good thing IMO. And hats off to Melnichenko for having the balls and conviction to build it.

Totally agree. Yes it's one of the most vulgar displays of wealth I've ever seen but I just can't bring myself to hate it.

I am looking forward to seeing her with her sails set, curious to see her fully dressed.

I think she is really different and her lines are subtle. But huge too.

To be fair, the owner will just chop it in. Probably has his next rig in the board. When you make your cash easy it's easy to blow it

Dykstra did the Dynarig on Maltese Falcon, along with the designs of quite a few J Class and many classic style sail boats that everyone loves. Funny how they suddenly don't know what they're doing with A.
I loathe the rig on Maltese Falcon, the spars are too chunky and it looks like a junk under sail.

Plus we moved away from square riggers because they are not that great upwind. Bermudan rings look so much more elegant IMO. I am sure A will see Kevlar/mylar/carbonfibre aloft, but for me its the hull and superstructure that looks wrong. The windage will be horrific.

Generally if a sailing yacht looks right, it is right if it looks wrong its generally not great to sail, this applies on all scales from an Optimist to an 80 metre superyacht
