Dykstra did the Dynarig on Maltese Falcon, along with the designs of quite a few J Class and many classic style sail boats that everyone loves. Funny how they suddenly don't know what they're doing with A.
I loathe the rig on Maltese Falcon, the spars are too chunky and it looks like a junk under sail.

Plus we moved away from square riggers because they are not that great upwind. Bermudan rings look so much more elegant IMO. I am sure A will see Kevlar/mylar/carbonfibre aloft, but for me its the hull and superstructure that looks wrong. The windage will be horrific.

Generally if a sailing yacht looks right, it is right if it looks wrong its generally not great to sail, this applies on all scales from an Optimist to an 80 metre superyacht
they should have built/designed the yacht in NZ. smile

I was referring to size range.

Opitmists are great for kids to learn in.

I learnt in a Firefly, lots of time spent swimming!

A is a sail assisted motor yacht, according to what's been released.
Ah, they always look wrong imo. See Fairey Fisherman for proof. Worst of both worlds

To be fair, the owner will just chop it in. Probably has his next rig in the board. When you make your cash easy it's easy to blow it
As yet there haven't been any takers for his similarly <erm> individually designed previous boat since they started trying to offload it. I can't see why there would be any expectation of finding a second home for the latest once he has tired of it and moved on to something else. To put it indelicately - the ultimate fate of both boats could be single owner yachts sent for scrap couldn't they?

maybe it's too expensive. Some people think their unique designed st is priceless. And of course look at the owner. perhaps a new buyer is worried someone might think he's that person.

I think that it is more simply summed up in that anybody would could afford the running costs of a mega-yacht can in equal measure afford to buy one built to their own personal taste. That is the root of my contention that there is a possibility that irrespective of price, a uniquely designed yacht at that level might never find a second owner. They are so expensive to run that you might not even be able to even give it away for free to anyone but a scrap yard...?

I think that one of the reasons why I like it, the fact that someone was prepared to sink hundreds of millions into something that they wanted with no concern for resale value or what other people may think about it.

I can't think of a better example of individualism that this which is refreshing in this day and age IMO

It's like people who spec Ferraris in uncommon colours because they like them rather than what the used market wants but on a whole bigger level.

your analogy isn't very good. In this case it's more like someone who was handed a billion or two every year and can afford to be frivolous.

Of course it's frivolous. It's a toy at the end of the day.

Still takes balls to commit that amount of cash though.

Disagree. £400,000,000 to him is about the same as £4000 to me.

If I came home with a 2013 Vauxhall Astra (and then, say, painted it pink and purple) I dont think anyone would call me ballsy.

'A' was moored off the palm jumeirah at the weekend so perhaps closer to finding a buyer?

Looked great imo and instantly recognisable. My flatmate an his gf commented on it whereas when we went out around the palm on a boat over xmas we motored right past quatroelle without anything being said.

'A' is back moored at Emirates Palace. Can see it from my window at the moment.

I have to say, one would get absolutely no sense of being on the ocean. It's completely enclosed. Impressive engineering is all.

I heard it has no stern thruster so is probably a pig to park. I note the tugs.
Normally tugs won't go near a yacht.

I watched Motoryacht A arrive in Barcelona last year and that took some effort to park also.

What about the 15 massive shell doors in the sides?

Probably good for privacy, seeing as there will be plenty of people who claim to not like the way it looks, but who spend all their time looking at it anyway, whilst dreaming up fanciful claims to make about it.
Oh right. You stand by a door to feel the ocean. Nice
