Now that is cool, it looks a lot bigger in the photo though! http://phys.org/news/2015-05-ten-engine-electric-p...

Needs more engines imo.
Showboating lunacy or perfectly planned and safe?

Not completely sure this fits the description of 'Planes' but it's certainly cool & interesting.

This may have been posted before but this is quite nostalgic for people of a certain age - and a sign of how much the RAF has shrunk since 1974

And another of the Buccaneer, didn't get the focus right in the first scene for some reason.

Thank you, I am of a certain age and enjoyed that immensely. I am amazed I missed it when first broadcast, although I guess A levels may have been in the way, or was it girls and beer? Sadly, Raymond Baxter made one uncharacteristic error in claiming that the Harrier was the first British aircraft bought by the USA since the First World War, completely forgetting the Canberra which became the Martin B57, of course.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dy31I_saWM

The US Airforce flew Spitfires and Mosquitos during WWII, didn't they buy them too?Dave46 said:

That was a good short watch, though is his claims about the Harrier being so American genuine? In that, as an uninformed non-aviator, I always thought the Harrier was a British designed and built plane?https://youtu.be/-PHcdn8R4d4

They weren't the only Spitfires the US used though. Plenty more including VIIIs and IXs were 'acquired', borrowed, reverse lend leased, whatever. Maybe not technically 'bought' but that's semantics.
In a way, it's not. During WW2 the USAAF took on board aircraft it otherwise would not have used in the normal course of events. It is highly unlikeley the USAAF would have bothered with Spitfires or Mosquitoes other than the fact they were available for use in certain theatres and the Brits owed the US a fortune anyway. The really impressive feat is when the US bought British aircraft simply because they couldn't do better themselves. The stand out examples of that are the De Havilland DH4 just after World War 1, the Canberra in the 1950s and, more recently, the Harrier and Hawk.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
