I guess I was asking how long before delivery a pilot could bale out and have any prospect of survival in that scenario.
I think it would depend on the attack profile, but assuming the approach was made at low level with no obstructions on the route to the target and a decent autopilot capable of compensating for the disturbance caused by his ejection, then I'd guess maybe 10 miles or so. Still risky though - even if they weren't injured or irradiated they've still dropped into a region they just nuked so won't be popular if found by the locals

But if the guidance was that good why have a pilot at all?

Because the Vulcan would launch them a lot further away than 10 miles - i.e. well over 100 miles from the target, which was well beyond any autopilot of the time

Very nice just needed a thumping rock and roll soundtrack like every other aircraft vid.

(just kidding).

IIRC the idea was to use them as manned cruise missiles, with a nuclear warhead in the rear cockpit. The pilot was expected to bail out before impact
Someone then thought it it was a great idea to use in training. The Navy's "Thursday War" uses a Falcon as the attacking aircraft, with a Hawk flying in close formation that then accelerates to play the missile and does a close pass on the target ship

Filmed this a week back, some Typhoons taking off and land at RAF Coningsby, unfortunately no reheat but lots of noise!
Was trying out my Sony AX53 so the quality is pretty decent.

Nice (y)

There was a vid posted a while back showing some joint exercise - all the US F-16/F-18/F-15 jets and French Mirages all needed afterburner to get off the ground within the length of the runway but the Typhoon didn't

thanks.
phoons have so much dry power that they rarely use reheat unless QRA, display or showing off..great machine when they do.

It is standing on the main gear on the lift mechanism.

Great footage here of two German Typhoons intercepting a commercial flight which had lost contact yesterday. You can also see another aircraft further down below crossing infront at about 1.30 or so.

Interestingly, the flight from which the footage is being taken seems relatively close to me - I didn't realise commercial flights flew that close to each other.
