Have managed to get both Sled Driver and the Untouchables as first editions.
Here they are with my collection of HABU Patches from Edwards Airforce Base & commemorative SR-71 coin

Just looking to get the 100 Years of flight patch to complete the collection

Nice collection. Just finished reading sled driver myself. Not the longest book in the world but very interesting nonetheless.

Nope, mine is fine - https://www.dropbox.com/s/lc4ck10ut0eb1qj/Sled%20D...smile
Thanks for checking. Will enjoy reading what I've been missing out on!

I've just sat & read the whole book. Very good, just shorter than I expected.

Tried to buy one of the limited edition box sets a few years back but he had sold out frown So started looking at collecting the first editions.

I was reading not long ago about both the SR-71 and the U2 when I came across this little snippet:

Wikipedia said:
In 1984, during a major NATO exercise, Flt Lt Mike Hale intercepted a U-2 at a height which they had previously considered safe from interception (thought to be 66,000 feet). Records show that Hale also climbed to 88,000 ft (26,800 m) in his Lightning F.3 XR749. This was not sustained level flight, but in a ballistic climb or a zoom climb, in which the pilot takes the aircraft to top speed and then puts the aircraft into a climb, trading speed for altitude.

That's what the Frightening did best, stand on it's arse & climb like a rocket with the reheat engaged.

Had it run out of fuel by the time it got to the top of the arc....? wink

That would have been a saving grace, since the other possible outcome was a large fuel leak and resulting fire, leading to ejection!

Google "sled driver pdf"

One of the results on the first page refers to women's rugby in the title - Click on that one.

Nice find indeed smile It could be just me that's paranoid but my AV picked up an outgoing communication when I opened the file. I've read a few pages but noticed spelling errors and typos which I find a bit weird for a published book.

Amazing book! Picked up a signed first edition copy a while back to read and shortly after that and then picked up a centennial edition for the collection. Lovely book but I'm scared to read it!

Managed to pick up a copy online for £30... Not sure of what edition it is, but it'll be fantastic to put on the shelf!

Little known fact that the Lightning was only fitted with wings to separate the nav lights.
