I'd go with Bostons too.

A close relative of the Baltimore was the Maryland - but I don't think they're Maryland noses either.

Maryland, Baltimore, Boston, Mitchell, even Hudson. Why were there so many such similar aircraft at the same time?

Question re: the Red Arrow Hawks...

Are they mostly standard - or have they been modified? How are parts sourced for them? How long will they be used for (wasn't the gnat used before the Hawk?)? And it seems that they are still useable aircraft - are they?

Another question - Does the RAF have a Boneyard like the US military?

Because there were lots of different customers.

The Maryland and Baltimore were ordered by the British and French as they rushed to build up their inventories when it was obvious a war was going to happen. The Maryland was the earlier design and the Baltimore was a development featuring a deeper and more capacious fuselage. The Hudson was a conversion of the civil Lockheed 14 and was ordered by the British because Lockheed claimed that they could deliver the large orders quite quickly.. Also, it was thought prudent to by the French and British to spread the orders around as many manufacturers as possible to alleviate the likelihood of logjams in production.
Although all the above aircraft were American, none were ordered by the US Army Air Corps/Forces or the US Navy.

The Mitchell was a slightly later design as was the Marauder and they were both ordered by the US Military - although versions of both saw service with other allied air arms, such as the RAF, Dutch Air Force and the South African AF.

AFAIK they're standard apart from the smoke system. The Hawk T1 is used by the RAF for advanced training, and the T1a for weapons training, so the Red Arrows aircraft will maintained as part of the standard RAF Hawk fleet. Saw a fantasic picture at RAF Brawdy years ago of one of the Red Arrows hawks fully armed, so presumable they're using the T1a

At one stage the Red Arrows Hawks hade a secondary air defence role and could be fitted with Sidewinders.

All the older Hawks are T1a's. They were modded up during the mid 80's.

Given the RA Pilots level of training and aquaintance with High G you wouldn't want to get in a Dog fight with one I'd imagine :-)

Great pics of them BTW, the smoke in the sunlight is really very impressive.
