Didn't the Swedes design a similar aircraft? It started of as prop driven, then was fitted with a jet.

what was the advantage to the mid mounted engine? was it purely aerodynamics?

It allowed heavy weaponry such as cannons to be installed in the nose of the aircraft.

There are advantages and disadvantages associated with various engine layouts. For propellor driven aircraft, on the whole, the nose mounted engine was the best option - which is why it was so popular with designers. The potential of these rear engined aircraft was never realised as they arrived on the scene just as jets were becoming available. Apart from the SAAB, none of the others entered operational service.

Looks like the Nazi rocket plane with a prop + engine fitted. ME-160 was it?

I think you are thinking of the Me163 Komet. The Komet was much smaller.

Yes, Eric, I know. I was cross-referring to one of the fuels used to power the Me-163.

Me neither, but I imagine they would have ended up with explosive bolts like the Do335 or maybe an ejector seat.
