Damage to the roof is a bit odd. Did the pilot eject through it? Cripes!!!

I doubt it. The Hunter was fitted with a 0-90 seat ie it would get you out on the ground but not below a forward speed of 90kts.
Allegedly the groundcrew guy in the seat was killed when it fired after part of the roof hit the top of the seat and triggered the firing pin frown
unlikely as (if memory serves) there are 2 one in the top and one between his legs

Not get you out at all or not open the chute fully?

Not deploy the 'chute fully and not result in seat separation.

The early seats were 'gun' seats. Basically there is a tube with three cartridges in it, pull the handle the cartridges fire in sequence and the resultant expanding gasses blow the seat out of the a/c. It takes a finite time for the automatics to operate (drogue gun, seat separation, full canopy deployment). If the drogue gun fires into a 90kt wind then (effectively) there is more time available for seat separation and canopy deployment.

Later zero-zero seats (zero height, zero speed), aside from having faster automatics (gas operated as opposed to trip rod operated) have a rocket pack on the bottom of the seat in addition to the normal 'ejection gun' of the earlier seats. Thus the ejectee reaches a higher apogee post ejection thus giving the systems more time in which to act.

In the above case, if the seat was initiated by debris from the roof falling on the Face-Screen (top) Handle then the chances are the guy would have still been in the seat when it hit the ground (if he was strapped in of course). For the seat to have been initiated in this way would (IMHO) indicate that the seat had been left in an unsafe condition (ie the pins hadn't been fitted). With bang seats, before you climb onto one, you make damn sure the seat is 'Safe for Parking'. In the case of a Hunter seat that would be: Seat-Pan Handle Pin, Face-Screen Handle Pin, and Guillotine Sear Pin (Manual Separation Lever) all fitted. Additionally you'd check that the Canopy Release Firing Handle Pin was fitted.

We've got the back end of that in our storage car park having used it for structural training, corrosion control and NDT work.
I used to work on it, whilst I'm sure they were excellent aircraft when they were made, by the time Ryanair got their hands on them they were past their best, I think they'd been using them for years before I joined and started to fly on them. The worst of the bunch was EI-COA, one of the last ones to still be in the Ryanair colour scheme, that and the Hertz liveried aircraft you were always guaranteed an eventful day!!

Update Re the Hunter pic. The Pilot was NOT killed. he was hurt but survived.
13/11/1969 XF297 BY-738 Hunter GA11 738 NAS Jumped the wheel chocks during full power engine checks at Brawdy, Pembrokeshire and ran into the 738 NAS office block. The pilot was seriously injured. After being extricated it was struck off charge and stripped for spares

I would very much doubt it was a Pilot doing static full power checks but a Techie.

I believe the front end has been turned into some sort of simulator and resides somewhere in East Sussex.
