Just Jane looks so much more authentic in a Matt/Eggshell finish, than PA474s Gloss finish
Back in the 70s and early 80s, the BBMF aircraft tended to carry quite a high gloss finish. This was purely to keep cleaning and maintenance costs down. Matt paints used to wear horrendously. You should see the state wartime Lancasters used to get into - if they lasted more than a handful of missions.
Since the 80s, paint technology has come on in leaps and bounds and now it is possible to have hard wearing and easily cleaned matt finishes on aircraft.

I've yet to come across a matt finish that is easily cleanable, going back to the 80's right up the aircraft I'm currently working on! I's fine when it comes out of the paint shop, and it starts going down hill from day one!Helicopter footage of a US 3 ship P51 formation for D-day commemorations.

The 188 was a gorgeous beast, here she is at Cosford.
crap picture though, she is so big my little flash wouldn't have filled the picture if I'd gone out away from her
Lovely; shame the engines were so guzzly she never really fulfilled her objectives, if the budget had been there to swap to something more economic(or even fit a IFR probe) the heat soak tests would have helped a lot with TSR2 and Concorde.crap picture though, she is so big my little flash wouldn't have filled the picture if I'd gone out away from her
The Lanc pictures are great too.
And now I am 7 again

A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress from the US Air Force Museum collection is being moved over the Mad River Bridge, Ohio from Patterson Field to Wright Field, 1957.
Dozens of aircraft were moved simultaneously on public roads for a towing distance of about six miles; it was accomplished on a Sunday morning to avoid high traffic.
