Great photo of one of my favorite aircraft. Runway optional - would put many 4x4s to shame! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-uqMUA7U-kFew from yesterday at RIAT.

are those genuine 109s or the Spanish version?
They're Hispano Buchons. Bf109 airframe modified to take a RR Merlin engine. As used in the film "Battle of Britain".(They were also painted in RAF colours in the film as Hurricane stand-ins!)
Strange to hear Merlins and look up to see Messerschmidts!

I worked on that aircraft (when it was a GR1) as a young J/T in the late 80s. Still going strong then.
PS, what have you done with my lovely (much newer) Harriers Mr Cameron????

They're the Buchons, am not aware of any original 109s actively flying. The tail chase with the P51s yesterday was great
There are about 4 or 5 Daimler Benz powered 109s currently flying, most in the US.The example flying in Germany is actually a Buchon with its Merlin replaced by a DB605. The Buchon was essentially a 109G with a Merlin.
