Seeing as its today, need to balance that up with something with the most powerful aero engine and largest propeller of the period, that outpaced and shot down those cruise missiles.

I never get very excited by helicopters, but this photo is interesting:

Something called the Kopp-Etchells effect. Interesting story here: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/but-not-simple...

(I see the story is dated 2013, so perhaps it's a repost?)

Nice shot of a Typhoon but I don't think many of them shot down any V1s.

Perhaps you meant to post a picture of one of these?

I can't remember the book but I'm fairly sure I read a book about a pilot flying typhoons who'd chased and shot down v1's.

This link seems to show at least one Typhoon pilot with three V1 kills so the picture of the Typhoon seems relevant to me smile

top speed of the the Tiffy was 400mph which was the cruising speed of the V1 so it was a brave man who did attempt it, but hey they were weren't they

I'm not saying its impossible but it certainly would have been a struggle for a Typhoon to catch up with a V1. The Typhoon's large, thick wing was a hindrance and one of the reasons why it was a failure in its intended role as an interceptor. It excelled in the ground attack role, of course,

It was because of the shortcomings of the Typhoon that the Tempest was developed.

The two main aircraft used to intercept V1s were the Tempest and the Griffon powered Spitfire XIV.

The Mosquito did really well.

No sign of any Typhoons though.

The link I posted a couple up shows a Typhoon 1b pilot of 137 Sqd shooting down three v1's, so unless the information is inaccurate, there is some sign of Typhoons shooting down V1's!

The Tempest shot down the highest number of V1's but the pilots of the rather beefy Typhoon managed some not none.

Yes - it does seem that they did have some limited success. The Typhoon would not have been fast enough to catch and shoot down a V1 in level flight - because of its thick wing. However, I expect in a shallow dive it could catch up with a V1 which is how, I expect, the few Typhoons that managed to shoot down a V1 were able to do it.

I was told the preferred technique was to tip them over with a wingtip to topple the gyro.
Shooting them resulted in flying through the wreckage which was not ideal.

Myth or true?

They never physically made contact. One wingtip was placed underneath the other and the disturbed airflow caused the V1 to topple

And that would have been very, very difficult for a Typhoon. Once it levelled off beside the V1 it would start dropping behind.

Cannon fire was used quite a lot but if the V1's warhead went off there was serious risk of your own aeroplane being damaged or even destroyed.
