I thought the weapons were meant to be internally stored for stealthyness, do any of you lot know how much these external weapons decrease its stealth capabilities?
A lot.Spend a fortune designing in stealth qualities and then blow it by hanging all sorts of gubbins under the wings.
I suppose the stealth options would be used if entering airspace that was well guarded by sophisticated radar systems.
I knew the Mi-26 was a big old bird but that picture really shows how big

That would be my guess too. Once the RADAR and SAM sites were taken out by aircraft packing internal stores the same way as aircraft like the F-117 did in the Gulf. You can then re-fit with external hard points and weapons (thus bigger) to deal with hardened structures etc.Spend a fortune designing in stealth qualities and then blow it by hanging all sorts of gubbins under the wings.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it for modern engines.
Oddly enough I do recall reading somewhere that for military engines at least, it could be used in emergency situations, though it wasn't good for the engine, wath were strict limits on time and power and mandated overhauls afterwards.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
