You can see why most manned spacecraft built after 1957 look like the 1957 concept.

This interesting franken-craft is the first 757 built and was used in 1998 as a testbed for Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor avionics and sensor integration.

I admit that at first sight I thought this was a photoshop, but it is a real aircraft - the PiperJet. Unfortunately it didn't sell well and production is now stopped

I think they only ever made one. Had the interesting feature that if the engine stopped, the nose pitched up. never a popular idea with pilots.

Why would such a teeny tiny plane need 4 engines? smile

'cause each engine isn't very powerful? Engines not reliable, so more for safety!

Good luck doing cross-wind landings in that. Mental. No wonder it never caught on.

Engines had around 3000lb thrust each, so not a lot. Sabreliner also had 4 engines od similar thrust, mounted in pairs to the rear fuselage, and was fairly successful with over 200 sold
