The Beaufort shot is of genuine World War 2 vintage - from the Charles Brown collection.

Whoops - someone forgot the trestles to support the tail.....

617 Sqn Tornado GR4
I was in a differant bay in the same hanger (doing vc10 majors) when this happened-raf st athan somtime in mid 2000's-there was lots of comotion and we all walked into this bay to see it sat there on its backside!
the story was that nightshift had removed the tail trestle and the aircraft sat there happily untill next morning when somebody got on it and walked down the spine and it back it went.
Wasn't too much damage-two slightly bent tailerons and thrust reverser buckets.
It happened at the begining of a major maintenance input.
Everybody was taking pics on their phones and we all got warned about showing them to anyone-i would probally know who took this pic.
pffft...

now here's one for you, what is the houchin type?

I witnessed the same thing pictured above but involving a BA 747 (G-AWNE) in September 1997 at Hatton Cross. Unfortunately no photos seem to exist.

On the subject of mishaps, a lot of RR Dart Engined airliners such as the 748 had a water-methanol injection system. This was used to boost engine power for takeoff and climb in hot/high/heavily loaded conditions. The injection system was fed from a bag tank in the wing root, just above the main fuel tanks.

One day, the Emerald Air ground staff at the Isle of Man airport, for unknown reasons, managed to inadvertently fill said tank with AVTUR instead.
Thus was born the first and only Dart engine to have reheat.......

Apparently the story is that this was off Malta, and the Maltese government had no time for the Yanks. There was a need for this Marine F4 to be aboard Ark Royal, so the tail was repainted so it blended in when lined up with our RN F4's. Other markings were covered in brown paper

Because it suffered a fault and couldn't fly off, the other US Phantoms that were operating off Ark Royal as part of a joint exercise returned to the USS Forrestal, that one was put down in the hangar out of sight. Probably the navy having a lark painting the tail, if it was kept any longer the rest would have been painted and it would have been claimed, rules of the sea. biggrin

So how did a US Spec (Not Spey engine) Phantom operate from Ark Royal? Was it just a case of having a light load?

Light load helped, they could also extend the nose carriage as well, not as much as the RN Phantoms though.
