Why not a CIA A-12 (much cooler!)?

I was just browsing through some shots I took at the last ever Leuchars Air Show in 2013 and thought I'd share them here. They may not appear 'amazingly cool' to everybody but I like 'em.

Two reasons -

i) I'm currently building up a collection of NASA and NACA themed models and NASA never operated A-12s (they did operate a YF-12 as well as a few SR-71s at various times)

ii) there is no kit available of the A-12. There are quite a few of the SR-71 in both 1/72 and 1/48 and Italeri do a nice YF-12 in 1/72.

The CIA aircraft are a bit dull looking as they carried minimal markings and (sometimes) a (usually false) serial number.

The XB-70 counts as one of the most outrageous aeroplanes ever built. I love it.

Maybe a new thread but has this question been posted before?

What is the most dangerous plane of all time - in the sense of doing what it's designed for.

Definitely a new thread - first you need to define the criteria you are judging by. One argument would be that it would be the B-29 because one bomber killed more people in a single mission than any other aircraft before or since.

Dangerous to whom - those who flew in it or those who were targetted by it?

My vote for dangerous plane is the starfighter, just one look at its proportions you know it was crap. Perhaps earlier planes were more dangerous, but they should have known better by the sixties.

Some pics lest we be mired in debate....

The Starfighter first flew in 1954.

It's crash rate was about the same as other similar capability aircraft of the era in which it was used.

Its accident rate with the West German air force and navy was higher than with other users and that was down to how their crew were trained.

Former RAF pilot Jerry Pook, "Flying Reestyle" describes the Starfighter as one of the best aircraft he ever had the pleasure top fly. Read his book and you might get a different perspective on its attributes -

Guess take out the A-Bomb and could still be B29 anyway?

Most dangerous aircraft? The Gee Bee R had a bad reputation

As did the Mignet 'Flying Flea'

The late lamented Vulcan was a bit dicey if you needed to escape from it. The pilots had ejection seats, the rest of the crew had a problem.

It was also attributable to the over ambitious role the germans gave it; the F104 was never going to be a good match for ground attack/recce however good it was as an interceptor, had UK-PLC been as good in the bribery and corruption stakes as Lockheed's sales dept the Luftwaffe and the Bundesmarine might have ended up with Buccaneer for attack and recce and Lightning or the slightly bonkers SR177 for interception.

The flea in that picture is the more highly developed and somewhat safer 1960s version. The original flea was actually very safe because the vast bulk of them never managed to get into the air -
