look at the size of the engines though, seems as if the modern unit is near the same size as the fuselage of the older <eeek>
The GE 90 engine on 777's is actually slightly wider than the fuselage on 737's.

Interesting comparison. It just shows how big the 787 actually is. And it also shows what you can do with only two engines these days when 50 years ago you needed three.
Yep, is is obviously larger, but the angle, and the way that image has been taken exaggerates the effect. The 787 is closer to the camera, as well as being at a good angle to show how long it is, whereas the 727 is almost front on, so we get little idea how long that is in comparison.

It is still larger though, and by quite a bit, but I would have liked to see a better image to really see them side by side. wink

Ok so why the bigger bird on the one closest. Must be a bit of trivia that someone knows?
I dunno but I do remember the Lightning squadrons getting a bit more heraldic before they went camo, maybe this was when.

Eric will almost certainly know

What I have noticed is what seems to have been a rather naughty zap across the roundel's red spot on the second bird in line

nono

Just in between livery changes, it's pictured here with the earlier smaller bird in 1969 - http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1518702/

Here are other aircraft with the bigger 23Sq bird in the 1970s (top 2) - http://www.abpic.co.uk/search.php?q=23%20Squadron&...

Not sure this has been posted before.

Remember those "Spitfires" buried in Burma, well there are F-111s buried in Australia.

Nothing in the report said why they buried them rather than breaking them up and melting them down.
Any ideas?

I think they claimed the airframes contained hazardous material. They wouldn't even give the cockpits away for display

Whatever happened to the vintage stuff in Iraq? Plenty of the HAS on what became Shaibah Log Base were comprehensively destroyed, but I'm sure there were significant bits of Tempests/Furys kicking around over there, along with some older jet fighters. And a WW1-era RAF hanger still in use when we were there too!

I posted a couple of these before - thought you might like to see some more. The guy in the round glasses was my Grandad's cousin, from the content of other photos he served in N.Africa, Malta and Italy.

A little bittersweet as it was the F111 that killed of the BAE TSR2.Well that and some help from Mountbatten and pressure from the US.
