What’s that behind it? Looks wrong for a Catalina.

It's a Consolidated P2Y - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_P2Y

One I wasn't familiar with. I presume it lost out to the Grumman HU-16 Albatross?

Thanks - I had a dim memory that there was one. They used a Bell 222 - and the late Jan Michael Vincent.
Metpol used to operate iirc a pair of B222s
A Bell 222 used to operate out of Blackbushe Airport, back before the BCA car auctions mob took over the whole of the north side of the runway. It was painted similar to Airwolf, dark with a pale 'belly', but obviously without the physical modifications. It was long after the peak popularity of the show though. And it wasn't around for that long either. But who knows with these things? Maybe it was sold, moved, or stayed around after being repainted. I just remember looking up and seeing it occasionally and pointing it out to my kids. "Hey kids! Look at that! It's Airwolf!!!" Sadly for me, they'd just look at me as if I'd taken a funny turn and say "Dad? What's an Airwolf?" rolleyes

Interesting. The B-29 was obviously top priority.

Not one I'd come across before. Interesting aircraft. Only two engines but bigger and more powerful than a Sunderland.

I like that Japan still operates 4 engine flying boats. ShinMaywa US-2 similar wingspan but 7m longer than a Sunderland.

Not when you're inside the buggering thing, with an all-NCO crew flying it sideways with the rotor disc drawing lines in the desert sand below you. And watching the instrument panel quivering away if you're fool enough to look out of the windscreen between the pilots. Horrid bloody things...

...I mean the helicopter is OK, but those AAC pilots? Horrid bloody things! wink

Growing up in Belfast in the 80s, these things caused me many sleepless nights, especially around school exams time. During the night they’d be aloft for hours above the area, barely moving, with the incessant screaming from the engine and rotors disturbing everyone in their beds below. When they’d shine the midnight sun searchlight along the streets, it was a bit more exciting, trying to get a chase from the beam.
